I know we don't have much information regarding fishing yet and this is causing some trepidation among some people, especially considering some of Yoshi-P's remarks about it seeming very casual and not having much of an impact apart from being something to do when you have nothing better to do.

XIVDB.com has dat mined the Phase 3 files and there are still recipes for cooking and alchemy that require fish, so rest assured fishing will still have a purpose, even if they dumb down the mechanics.

I said fishing would probably still use crafting along time ago, still that's FANTASTIC news. my guess is what Yoshi meant with his low npc price comment at e3 was he didn't want to make fisher like ff11 fishing with everyone fishing to sell to npc

I was also looking around on XIVDB.com which has dat mined the Phase 3 beta info. They have the abilities for fisher listed there but they weren't translated over from Japanese. Keep in mind they're still working on fisher so this is subject to change. There's also a few here I'm not able to interpret correctly thanks to Google jibberish so I left them as is for speculation. Here's what I was able to glean from Google Translate:

Cast
Fisher Lv.1
Begin fishing.

Exit
Fisher Lv.1
Abort fishing.

Discover spot
Fisher Lv.15
Discover special fishing spot up to LV35.

Stealth effect up
Fisher Lv.18
Elude monsters up to level 30 when the "stealth" effect is enabled.

Stealth effect up II
Fisher Lv.28
Elude monsters up to level 40 when the "stealth" effect is enabled.

Discover spot II
Fisher Lv.33
Discover special fishing spot up to LV44.

Sand fishing (one I couldn't figure out)
Fisher Lv.35
It is to run as a cast fishing the sand.

Stealth effect up III
Fisher Lv.38
Elude monsters up to level 50 when the "stealth" effect is enabled.

"Cut Bait" (my personal naming :P)
Fisher Lv.40
Use the fish you caught as live bait. (thanks to Reinheart for the translation)

Discover spot III
Fisher Lv.43
Discover special fishing spot up to LV50.

Cloud fishing (another I can't figure out)
Fisher Lv.45
It is to run as a cast fishing the sea of clouds.

On those ones with the weird abilities, I'm going to run them by Reinheart and see if he can get a translation for me.

Edit: Rein got one that made sense, the others translate pretty much the same as in Google, so the desert and sky fishing thing seems really weird...

Also, upon searching for my information, Reinheart stumbled across a Famitsu article released today talking about fishing. Thanks goes to Reinheart of course for translating this.

For Fisher are you thinking of a way to make them useful for other players like other Gatherer/Crafter classes?
Yoshida: In previous FFXIV they were used in recipes. Like requiring fish scales for a part of armor. As a game it's good to have it but when making a game it's easy to fall into making all classes the same "This class can do this so this class should be able to do the same". This balancing, making all of them the same would be boring, and to make something more complicated (more parts) would cause inconvenience to the players. I don't want to put in the games foundation where it forces player to do stuff (make it more complicated).

That is why we haven't released Fisher in beta test phase 3, Fisher is a class where people really want to enjoy roleplay fishing, but at same time you'll need to choose the fishing rod, bait, setup, and think about the types of water, I was really undecided till the end but if you drop a line in cloud of sea you will be able to fish living in the clouds. Also fishing in quicksand. At first I said it's No Go but they really wanted to do it, they said just being water will make it too small (scale), they pushed saying this is Fantasy (laugh). So I told them if they can make it very persuasive then it's OK, the person in charge is working hard at making the data. I'm cheering them on!

So it sounds like they're trying to make it to where you can fish from high places with a bunch of clouds or quicksand rivers. Pretty neat!

Earlier today GE posted this interview with Yoshi P from E3, they were a little slow getting it up but it has some fishing questions.

GE: It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about fishing. Can you tell us how it’s going to work and when we will be able to try it?

Yoshida: Fishing will be available starting in phase four of the beta test. Players can check it out then. We mentioned before in a Producer’s Letter live, but the concept that we have for fishing in FFXIV is that we didn’t want to make it action based. We didn’t want actions like a battle class has, or to be pressing buttons at certain times like it was originally. Rather, we want to have players just go to a lake or river or ocean, and have players, depending on what type of water it is and maybe what time of day it is, choose which rod you are going to use, and maybe what bait or lure you are going to use. The concept is that fishing is supposed to be a conversation with nature. We wanted the fishing in fourteen to be representative of that.

We really wanted it to be something you can do in the free time that you have. For example, you go into the duty finder and while waiting in the queue, you can change to fisher and fish a little bit, and when your number comes up, change back and go. Or if you are waiting on a friend to log in. To be able to do something in that downtime that’s fun, but relaxing.

GE: Are there going to be any types of actions you need to do while fishing? We have seen comments that this could be easy for RMTs to bot if there are no actions to take.

Yoshida: Even now, RMT can create bots to get around the timing of actions. What we don’t want is to have fishing become stressful. It is supposed to be a relaxing thing. Pressing extra buttons for actions is going to create that stress. We’re going to make sure that the stuff you get from fishing is not stuff that is going to be lucrative for RMT. The system needs to be relaxing.

What we want is for fishing to be more about what you’ve done. So maybe achievements for catching certain sizes of fish? Or having a log that keeps track of your own collection of what you’ve caught before, or how big a fish you’ve caught before, or whether you have fished in all fishing spots? Having things that are connected to you.

This is not to say we’re not thinking of other things. For example, maybe you fish up a treasure map, and that map leads to a new quest- we are planning things like that.

Side note: the quicksand thing is interesting but is it just me or in general are Yoshi answers about fishing VERY vauge?

I think his answers sound very vague because the fishing system isn't even finalized yet. If you read this section of my above post:

It makes it sounds like Yoshi-P hasn't even seen a concept of the fishing system even working yet.

I just had a thought...

http://www.novacrystalli...xiv-developer-interview/

Quote:

Nova Crystallis: Will there be story content for gathering and crafting classes?

Yoshida: Yes. All classes – battle, crafting, gathering – will have separate quest lines. Crafters and gatherers will have their own quest lines up through Level 50. The battle classes will have quest lines up till Level 30, and then from there you’ll have the Job Lines.

In regards to battle classes, they learn new abilities at levels 15 and 30. The sand and cloud fishing abilities are learned at a "5th" level, which could indicate that they're learned via a quest. Wouldn't that be awesome?

I know this is off topic but Orophin that interview is fantastic, i had never even heard of that website before they asked alot of questions i had not seen answered before, Not all of it was good news... but still great info.

Quote:
Nova Crystallis: Similar to Hamlet Defense, will there be endgame content for gathering and crafting classes?
Yoshida: We don’t have plans to have any type of content like that for those classes. We tried Hamlet Defense in 1.x and we found that there was a lot of limitations in designing the battles, and from that learned that it wasn’t the best thing to do. We want to redefine the gathering and crafting classes compared to 1.x. Crafters are there to craft weapons and armor to be used by battle classes to then clear content. Gatherers need to gather high quality materials for crafters to make high quality gear for battle content.

Crafting and Gathering will be used in other areas for example; housing, for furniture, and PvP, for ballistas and similar things. We do have things planned but
we want to bring it back to the traditional type of gathering and crafting.

I was afraid of that. Ahh well.

If there are no actions to do one should think that getting to level 50 would be a matter of setting your character near some water and let him/her fish for hours and hours. Then move it a bit around to higher level areas etc.

This actually sounds like botting to me. I like the fact that it would remove the RMTs as every one would be able to do it. On the other hand it makes level 50 seem like no challenge at all as you wouldn't need to do anything other than putting you character next to some water before going to bed in the evening.

But I probably shouldn't think too much about it as I am sure they are going to make a solid system and I will just get carried away BigGrin

I like the fact that it's more of a personal thing but after having completed Luminary Rod I really don't want to start all over getting achievements LOL.

I would think that Sand/Cloud fishing was a kind of spearfishing for certain locations but that is just my interpretation.

I've made my feelings clear here and in the official forum several times based on what we have been told and what we have not which leads to speculation and a lot of bad assumptions. I am not concerned for myself in regard to gil made from fishing. Even with the gil adjustments it won't be an issue making gil as easy as Yoshi has made 14.

I fish because it's enjoyable, the scenery/locations and good memories I have from ffxi. You have to have a solid balance between leisurely fun and challenges that include quests/trials for fish and gear and catching certain fish. I don't fish all the time to sit and chat.

My view is Yoshi thinks very little of fishing and maybe dol in general. It's already known his main love is battle. I get that is the main focus in these games but why you would go half ass on any aspect of this reboot is beyond me.

So we may be getting some watered down fun time bore fest based on achievements which is cool for that last part but I don't want to fish to put a checkmark on a list like we did for golden tools all the time. We shall see.

Hmm, looking at xivdb.com, it looks like they've done away with crystal splitting with fish. I was hoping they'd at least keep that.

It is good to see that you can queue for a dungeon while on a different class; I was very worried about this.

As a hardcore fisher from 1.0 before I got bored with pretty much everything except fishing, I just have a feeling I am not going to like the way it ends up in ARR. But we will see... Hi Kida, I am downloading the beta client and looks like I am back ^_^

Hi Fallensbane and welcome. Great to have you back.

Be sure to at least give the beta a try. It really has become a very beautiful game. And keep your hopes up and cross your fingers. Maybe fishing in ARR will be AMAZING. As mentioned above... we don't really know enough and anything can happen (and hopefully will) Smile

I am coming back regardless of fishing. Just I expect disappointment with what I have read, which admittedly needs to be cleared up by the devs or us seeing it in phase 4.
