A linkshell friend helped me out with some crafting macros for ARR, but neither of us could find any way to use a macro for gathering.

I'm imagining that you go to a node, choose your target resource and then press a button to start a macro, which would effectively do this:
  • press X (on the controller)
  • wait 2
  • press X
  • wait 2
  • (etc)

for 5 or 6 repetitions.

However, I couldn't find a way to have a macro swing my pickaxe or hatchet.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if this is possible without a third party program, because I don't know how you can mimic a key press within a macro. Most macros are setup with an action command, but pressing a key on the controller doesn't count as that.

I'm pretty sure things were set up this way to prevent botting.

Yeah all I can think of is the basic macros we used in 1.0 for equipping gear and using stuff like dowse, gulleye like here: http://ffxiv.zam.com/wiki/FFXIV_Macros. I also am not aware if or how the macros will have to be adjusted for the new DoL mechanics.

In 1.0 you had all these abilities but none that actually made you fish if I remember correctly..same for bot and mining. I'll have to do some crafting and dol more this weekend and see. Not sure the principles behind macros for doh will work for dol and it doesn't help that fishing isn't out yet and we have no freakin clue what it will be like.. well except for what we've read.

Welcome to the forum by the way Amnesia^^

Well, there are definitely macros that work for crafting. For example, I have a macro called "1/40" (meaning that durability=40 and it takes only one successful synthesis to complete). It's something like:
  • /ac "Basic Touch" <me>
  • /wait 3
  • /ac "Basic Touch" <me>
  • /wait 3
  • /ac "Basic Touch" <me>
  • /wait 3
  • /ac "Maker's Mend" <me>
  • /wait 3
  • /ac "Basic Touch" <me>
  • /wait 3
  • /ac "Basic Synthesis"

(that's as close as I can remember--- don't have the game up, obviously)

I don't see why they would allow DoH macros but not DoL ones...

Because gatherers don't use actual abilities to obtain an item. They use selection commands. (confirm button on controller, left click on mouse, numpad0 on keyboard)

As to why SE decided to do it this way? Your guess is as good as mine, but again, I think it's an anti-botting/RMT measure. They're apparently less concerned with crafting being exploited than gathering.
