"Is there a guide or gentle soul that can tell me the difference in item quality/rarity? I know basic gear from vendors is white and the lowest. And I've seen green and pink items as well. So far, the only difference is that pink items generally are "aetherial" but I'm not sure what that means. I'm assuming there are others, but I'm not sure about how they scale.

Also, is it strange that I would use a green item for 15 levels (15 -> 30) because the other options were nowhere near as good? I expect at higher levels, items won't generally last 15 levels."

Regarding item quality:

There's a materia melding thread on the beta forums and one of the most important pieces of information to come from that is if you have an HQ piece of armor, you can't further increase the native stats on the armor with materia. So basically you have to find another stat to beef up if you have HQ gear.

Also, I found that green drops *most* of the time were better than aetherial due to them being better stat wise, at least as far as weapons go. I've received an aetherial weapon and a green weapon in the same dungeon and the green overshadows it in raw attack power.
