I never really did much harvesting in FFXI. Was it worth it or was it just passtime?
I of course plan on testing it out in FFXIV not least to get the information in the database but I wonder how many places you will be able to do it and weather or not it will be profitable. In ffxi you weren't able to harvest that many places (not compared to fishing anyway) and this seems to limit the usefulness of harvesting.
I guess we have to wait and see... *SIGH* I can finish all posts like that... can't keep waiting.
Please share your experiences on harvesting if you ever practised it. |

I did some of mining and wood cuting in XI. It's very hard and slow to get loots out of it. a lot of time spend for a little loots, if you try to make money from gathering it's not really worth it but if you bored or doing it for fun it's ok I guess. I was doing Goldsmith in XI and I make money faster just buy my ingredians for crafting from AH but it's seem to be easier this time around in XIV from this leak Video I found on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9mI66kydgU&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGLWJ-a5ofY&feature=related this is my first post and I'm sorry if I have a lot of misspell since english is not my first language sorry

Those videos are some great finds... I set the first one in the news so everyone could see it. It is really interesting to see how logging works. It looks like this could become very interesting indeed and very different from XI :D I hope that fishing will be just as intriguing. Thanks for the vids...
Oh and don't worry about the English. It is not my first language either and we all understand it if there are some spelling errors ;) |

Cool videos... I love the second one where he is chopping down trees. I wonder if this is how it is going to be in the final game. Is he trying something out and then adjusting the way he chops? Awesome! From these videos we can also tell something about the items to put in the database ;) nudge nudge... know what I mean.
It seems very slow though. He waits a lot before chopping. I know there should be some delay but with all the settings he goes through it would be nice to have it go a bit faster so you don't sit and wait all the time. I would rather get a hit less often and then chop away like a crazy Edited by user Friday, July 30, 2010 5:55:18 AM(UTC)

The logging system seem very interesting indeed but in that Vid it's seem very slow for character to respond to the command. I hope they fix this before the release.

I did a great amount of harvesting in FFXI in my earlier years of the game. The problem with H.E.L.M. (Harvesting.Excavation.Logging.Mining, for the uninitiated) was that the various points that you could obtain these materials were spread out over the map quite a bit. This made it rather difficult to catch the spawn points to harvest from. Thankfully as Botanist and the like are fully realized classes they give abilities to track down harvest points and when you do find one they seem to have independent quantities of items for each player. As opposed to in FFXI where the amount was shared and frequently in the earlier parts of the game people would fight over very limited harvest points and one person might watch the harvest point disappear in front of their eyes
There also was the problem of having to carry stacks of the proper tools to harvest/mine/etc with. You would need 24+ of them and they would frequently break even if you received nothing from your harvest...
I like the addition of permanent tools and I imagine we'll be able to obtain improved versions as well, perhaps with a requisite skill level required to make use of them. This would prevent just any new person from hoarding in on your market if you are a dedicated harvester.
I like where they are going with this so far, even though currently from what I've read all the harvesting/etc is done server side and thus the long delays in actions are caused. Hopefully they will move it client side in the retail version, but I suppose it may be a rather crude countermeasure to botting harvesting/fishing.

The biggest problem with H.E.L.M was actually that your character never got better at it. Didnt matter if you've logged 100 hours mining, you had the same randam ass chance of getting crap every swing as someone doing it the first time. Not the case with fishing/chocobo digging. Although I did make a lotta gil mining in the beginning, the effort was wasted imo as I would have been better off using that time fishing/digging.
That said, mining/botany in ffxiv are 1000% times better than ffxi. I prefer ffxi's fishing though so far.

I agree, I really like being able to rank up gathering classes in FFXIV. Logging and Mining were also harder in FFXI because it only took 1 time for another player to be able to move the point somewhere else. A lot of times people would come in and take the spot right from in front of you, so you had to be fast.
There were no abilities to help you find points either. I used ffxi-atlas a lot to help me find points and would basically have to make rounds until I found one. If other players are mining/logging at the same time, it's possible to run around the zone this way for hours as they are constantly moving the point around before you can get to it.
The times you can really make money off gathering in FFXI is when a certain item suddenly becomes popular, like after an update or for an event. I made a lot of gil off Dogwood Logs one year during the Sunbreeze Festival when a lot of crafters wanted them for event furnishings (myself included). Caedarva Mire was downright scary with all the aggro around, but you still had to be fast about logging the area before someone else came in. |
