Finally hit rank 25 and was eager to see the rank 30 guildleves to see the rewards and try them out. 

First two casts I actually had blue corals on the line with Floating Minnow, but I lost both of those just barely (hence being able to see what they were). After that, I tried all the starter baits and lures purchasable, including Crow Fly (rank 13 optimal):

Nothing bites.

I got this message for the remaining 25 minutes with a nibble every 10 casts, which I'd lose during the first jig. I guess rank 25 is still too low for reliably fishing Grade 4 pools, as I've had absolutely no luck with Grade 4 pools when I went exploring around 23 and 24. I guess I'll try again in a few levels.

This is the one I failed, taking place at (33,30) on the little island. Island is populated with non-aggro Casseopeias.

Here's the other. As you can see, neither gave marks.

But on a happier note, I did just buy my Willow Fishing Rod (was not used in this guildleve). :)

During my level 20 guildleves, my first few times I was able to do them they did not give guildmarks, but the exact same leves started producing guildmarks as I repeated them. I am confident the same will be true here.

On a small side note, the lower level leves have started giving me equipment/armor now too. Such as Limsa Lominsa Skull Valley Rank 10 leve provided me the Tarred Walking Hat, and I think it was in Gridania the level 10 that rewarded with sheepskin calligae and a friend of mine said he received a sheepskin harness.

I believe grade/area decides what fish are at the node. The fish's skill compared to your skill decide on whether or not it bites and you can catch it.

I think it's you have to be withing X levels for it to bite, then you lose a lot of stamina per jig. The higher your skill is, the less stamina you lose per jig.  Nibbles seem to lose more stamina on the initial jig than bites.

Also not sure how it works for the "fish is tired, hit here again" thing. I'm assuming it's either based on level, or based on the fish. Seems certain fish are "special" to certain nodes, like Dark Bass.

Update. I tried again after reset and completed both successfully, still at rank 25. I used my Willow Fishing Rod this time and it was a HUGE difference. I got more bites and nibbles than I got no bites, it was great. The promising fishing spot one gave me 1440 guild marks. Only problem is I wasn't expecting to complete it this time and I didn't trade any other guildleves in for fear of failing it. :/ Oh well, at least now I know I can do them.

I am now fishing at Grade 4 locations. :)

Out of the fish I reeled up today (Hammerhead Sharks, Bianaq Bream, Blue Coral), those Fresh Lobsters were the hardest to jig up as they took a ton of stamina. Luckily I got my last Lobster at 1:40 remaining.
