Greetings fishmongers!

With the arrival of Phase 4 we're finally able to get our hands on fishing. I spent a few hours of this morning checking it out with my 1.0 character as to get a feel for the new system. While initially it seems rather simplistic, I believe it will become more complicated in the higher levels.

First, let's look over the abilities and traits for fishing:

Abilities

Lv1 - Bait - Select the bait to apply to your line.
LV1 - Cast - Cast your line and begin fishing.
LV1 - Hook - Attempt to hook the fish nibbling on the bait.
LV1 - Quit - Abandon fishing attempt and reel in line.
LV8 - Stealth - Conceal yourself and tread quietly, reducing movement speed, but enabling you to avoid enemies. (effectiveness increased every 10 levels after learning it via traits)
LV25 - Mooch - Use the fish already hooked to your line to attract even larger prey. (only seems to work after catching a HQ fish)

Traits

LV 15 - Gulleye / LV35 - Gulleye II / LV50 - Gulleye III - Allows you to discern the location of fishing holes up to level 15/35/50. (this trait is needed to fish at certain locations, such as Woad Whisper Canyon, Salt Strand, etc.)
LV 18 - Enhanced Stealth / LV 28 - Enhanced Stealth II / LV 38 - Enhanced Stealth III - Increases the range of enemies avoidable when using Stealth to level 30/40/50.
LV35 - Dunefishing - Allows you to cast your fishing line in deserts and dunes.
LV40 - Double Mooching - Allows you to mooch with a mooched fish.
LV45 - Skyfishing - Allows you to cast your line in the Sea of Clouds.

Mechanics
Basically how fishing works is you walk up to any open area where water is nearby and Cast your rod. (your Cast ability will light up when you're in a spot you can fish) This puts you in fishing mode. From here you can select your bait, cast your rod, quit fishing, or mooch with a fish you caught, if applicable. The Gathering stat determines whether you can actually land the fish or not, while Perception determines if you will catch an HQ version of the fish. (Important for Mooching)

Once a fish is caught, it goes into your inventory, is logged in your Fishing Log and is logged in your records log with its length if it's the largest fish for a particular type of fishing area. (river, sea, lake, etc) Once a fish is logged, if it is caught in another body of water other than where you originally caught it, it will automatically be populated in the log for that new area regardless if you catch that fish or a different one.

Some fish can be used with the Mooch ability after it has been caught to try to catch larger fish. So far I've noticed only certain fish can be used and it also has to be a HQ fish. I've been fishing in the La Noscea area and so far I've been able to catch Blue Octopus with a few fish I've been able to Mooch.

Each major area within a region (i.e. Lower La Noscea within La Noscea) has several smaller areas in which you can fish from, and each area has an assigned level and normally will commonly have a fish that is specific only to that fishing area, along with fish that are shared among the others. For example, Moraby Bay is a sub area of Lower La Noscea, and it's recommended as a level 5 fishing area. There are a total of 9 sub areas you can fish in in Lower La Noscea with the level range varying from level 5 up to level 20.

As I've been confined to the lower levels of La Noscea so far, I haven't had an opportunity to find an area where I can cloud or sand fish yet.

Eventually I will try to start tracking which bait fish bite on. Tracking location won't be too important as that information is referenced in your fishing log, but I'll probably record it anyway for those who want to know where certain fish are and haven't located them yet.

This will definitely be a work in progress and I doubt I'll be able to barely make a dent in the content available with the limited amount of time we have to play this weekend. My focus for this evening after I get off work is to get airship access so that I can freely move around and open up some gearsets. I'll then wander around and gather materials to craft all the baits and lures so that I can start progressively traveling through each area and see which fish bite on which bait.

Bait and Lures

The bait and lures for fishing in ARR seem to be relatively similar to those in 1.0. There are two freshwater (crayfish balls and moth pupa) and two saltwater (lugworm and pill bug) baits that can be purchased initially from a vendor in Limsa Lominsa. As you increase in level and move onto higher level fishing spots you will find that the lower level baits will have limited effectiveness, so you will eventually want to seek out higher level baits and lures.

Bait can be found on both vendors and can also be crafted. The crafted versions are created by culinarians using fish you have caught and combining it with flour. Each synthesis uses three fish and creates 10 bait. Bait is split between types that can catch both freshwater and saltwater fish.

Lures can also be found on vendors and the ones that can be crafted are created exclusively by Goldsmiths and also span between freshwater and saltwater fish. Each synthesis creates 3 lures.

Here is a list of fish and what bait they're capable of being caught with. It's of course a work in progress as I'm primarily playing a new character now.

https://dl.dropboxuserco...F14%20ARR%20Fishing.xlsx

Below are the recipes for bait and lures that I pulled out of my recipe books this morning and are sorted between Freshwater and Saltwater. There are some that don't specifically say on the tooltip (like the jigs) what they're used for, so I just left them unknown for now. Class Quests

LV1 - Deliver 5 Lominsan anchovies to Sisipu. These can be caught within Limsa Lominsa with the lugworms you were initially given for joining the guild, but more can be purchased from the Fieldcraft merchant in Hawker's Alley.

LV5 - Deliver 3 harbor herrings to Sisipu. These can once again be caught within Limsa Lominsa with Pill Bugs. These can be purchased from the Fieldcraft merchant in Hawker's Alley.

LV10 - Deliver a HQ princess trout to Sisipu. These can be caught with crayfish balls which were rewarded for the level 5 class quests, or can be purchased from the Fieldcraft merchant in Hawker's Alley. I caught these in the stream outside of the exit to Lower La Noscea where the toads are located. (might want to head all the way to the back of the cave since a FATE spawns here and the toads have a large AoE attack)

LV15 - Deliver 5 Navigator's Daggers to Chuchuroon near the Fisherman's Guild. These can be caught with Rat Tails, which can be purchased from the Merchant & Mender NPC in Aleport. The target location is Brewer's Beacon in Western La Noscea. You have to position yourself behind the tower to be in the correct area. (thanks Zetanio!)

LV20 - Deliver 5 warmwater trout to Chuchuroon. These can be caught with the Crow Fly lure at Oakwood in Upper La Noscea. Crow Flies can be either crafted (see bait and lure post) or purchased from the Junkmonger in Oakwood.

LV25 - Deliver a shadow catfish to Sisipu. This can be caught at Fallgourd Floats in North Shroud by catching a HQ Striped Goby and Mooching it. Striped Goby can be caught with crayfish balls. (Better results found with Moth Pupa as they single out only Striped Goby)

LV30 - Deliver 10 fullmoon sardines to Tocktix. These can be caught in Costa del Sol or South Bloodshore with Spoon Worms, and only at night time. (Between 7pm and 6am game time)

LV35 - Deliver a desert catfish to Tocktix. This can be caught at Sagoli Dunes dunefishing location, which is in the furthest east section of the bottom section of the map in Southern Thanalan. Heading east and south from Forgotten Springs will get you there. (approximate location is X25-27 Y36) They can be caught with a Sand Leech. (the only dunefishing bait you can use at this point)

This is all awesome Orophin. I was able to get some fishing done in Gridania. It was as expected mostly freshwater. The high level areas does not (also as expected) seem to be implemented yet. I had a chocobo run through some of the high level areas of East Shroud and was now able to find a single spot.

I am going to record every thing I catch as well. So far it has not been too many things but I do like the system and I look forwards to the things they get done along the way. There is not much to it but I think it is nice and relaxing. It feels like bait will play a bigger role and mooching is also an interesting touch. I have not yet been able to try it out as nothing I have caught has been suitable.

By the way. How are you able to evaluate the recommended level of the fishing spot? I did not see this information any where.

By the way. It does not seem as records of all fish are saved. I have caught several different types of fish and not all of them are in my record book. It actually looks like there is only room for six fish? Any input?

Thanks for the post Oro! I'm making a pretty detailed list over at BG.

Quick question:
How do you do the level 15 fishing quest?
I can't use Rat Tail's that close to the gate area and fishing further away doesn't get me any of the Daggers.

Aw damn, and I thought the multiquote function was actually going to work. :(

Kida - In your fishing log once you catch a fish at a spot it'll show you the recommended level of the area when you click on it. Regarding the record book I haven't looked closely enough at it yet. I'll try to get more info on the finer points of things. I was more or less having a quick and dirty look at how the fishing system was functionally with the little time I had before work.

Zetanio - Haven't done any of the class quests yet since I haven't finished my first class's level 10 class quest yet (started as an Arcanist, so I get to level from 1-10, derp) but if you have an update on this feel free to post. :)

I'll be working on getting my airship access tonight, then maybe I'll go through the fishing quests myself to see what they're about.

I blew through almost 80 Rat Tails all over the zone.

Nothing.

Sent a bug report. :)

I'm almost finished clearing La Nostea fishing spots. I'll have a big list together soon.

EDIT: Found em

Can be caught at Brewer's Beacon between Swiftperch and Aleport. You have to be behind the watchtower thing.

Also, you can buy rattail and midge baskets at the Merchant in Swiftperch.

So i mguessing all the 1.0 baits were pulled outh, even though they pretty much implement all the same baits again for the most part. I have no bait on any of my 1.0 characters and I had minimum of 99 stacks on everything.

Yes... I don't know why they did this but I too lost quite a lot of bait and lures. I found out when trying to fish for the first time and was unable as I had no bait. Which leads to the fact that you can't fish without bait or lure.

From the little I have fished I can it seems like its going to go fairly similar as far as the way baits work from 1.0

Fish will bite on X Bait/Lure
Fish will bite harder on X Bait/Lure

However unlike 1.0 where you would get Saltwater fish biting on any saltwater lure or fresh biting on any freshwater lure/bait, some fish seem to completely ignore baits meant for their water types. Which should make targeting fish easier. For instance I was not getting oysters with goby balls but as soon as I swapped over to rats I started pulling them in.

I also expect that those blue octos im getting will only be pulled on a 'mooch' and certain other fish will only be puled on a double mooch, making the fishing experience a bit deeper than what we had. But only time will tell.

Also I noticed some baits I was getting "May not be suitable for this location" after only moving from a dock area to a cliff area in the same general region. So bait/fishing hole combos may be a bit less cookie cutter as well.

Updated thread with class quest information (currently capped at 20) and added some more bait/lure information. I'll spend some time visiting various NPCs on my travels recording who is selling what. Seems like you might not have to actually craft any bait yourself, but if you have the materials handy it's always an option.

Also Kida, here's some screenshots to illustrate some of the points I mentioned earlier.

The red circles show in the fishing log the level of the fishing area.

If you click a fish in your fishing log (black circle), it pulls up the master fish list. If you click the icon circled in red it pulls up your fishing records. Apparently I thought it was more in depth than it was, but it only seems to have records for fish in each water type.

I'm guessing the last two are possibly sand and clouds as I haven't gotten around to fishing in those types yet.

Nicely done. Feel free everyone else posting or using the info elsewhere to thank Oro for all the effort and information.

I haven't tried fishing yet which I'm ashamed to say. Been so busy lvling up other jobs and doing misc. things that I haven't got around to it yet. Probably cause I'm capped already I guess. I hope that's just a bug Kida on those fish not going in the Log since that seems to be the main reason to fish.

This information is from a non-legacy character (as I started anew) currently lvl 12.

Perception is to catch HQ fish.
HQ fish give 300% XP.

Fishing in the same area long enough you can get a message "The fish sense something amiss. Perhaps it is time to try another location". Changing your location on the same location resolves the message. This is clearly anti-botting code.

Every outdoor zone seems to have one SPECIAL location that you can not fish normally. You get a message "You can sense something swimming below, but are uncertain where". In these locations I was never able to cast. I am assuming a skill is required. The location in Middle La Noscea where you get this message is Woad Whisper Canyon. In Lower La Noscea the location is at The Salt Strand. These areas are included in the fishing log, so you can not complete these outside areas without casting here.

That's all the unique information not covered above that I have.

I too did all the guild quests through 20. I am perplexed as to where Gulleye the action is. I have the related traights but I cant find the action. I thought it might come through the fisher quests.

Any ideas? Am I missing something?

I am going to record every thing I catch as well. So far it has not been too many things but I do like the system and I look forwards to the things they get done along the way. There is not much to it but I think it is nice and relaxing. It feels like bait will play a bigger role and mooching is also an interesting touch. I have not yet been able to try it out as nothing I have caught has been suitable.

By the way. How are you able to evaluate the recommended level of the fishing spot? I did not see this information any where.

I went into the Sahagin stronghold near Tidegate and was able to Ocean fish for fairly high level fish. I used the Krill Cage Feeders (which are expensive by the way, like 480G per and each catch uses a bait) and caught the following:

Western La Noscea - Halfstone - Saber Sardine (Krill Cage Feeder)
Western La Noscea - Halfstone - Sea Pickle (Krill Cage Feeder)
Western La Noscea - Halfstone - Lavender Remora (Krill Cage Feeder)

I mostly just cranked through the LV 15 FSH quest and did some log fishing as I went. I always have one or two stubborn blanks it seems per area in the log. I'm guessing they need to be mooched to catch them like the Blue Octopus in Limsa. I did catch a non-mooched Blue Octopus but it was in Skull Valley iirc (at work, can't remember).

When I get home tonight, I'm going to try to crank out some FSH gear improvements if possible. I have a RotL and decent gear, but anything to improve the Mooch rate is welcome (given it's HQ triggered). It's just really tough as the starred recipes are neigh-impossible to make right now; they have really high minimum craftmanship levels.

I hope I can whittle my bait repetoire down to a handful like you could in 1.0 (e.g. Floating Lure ftw). FSH is killing my inventory right now.

Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Gulleye is just a trait and allows you to fish in waters up to the level of Gulleye you have. The first trait allows you to fish in waters up to level 15, then 35, then 50. Basically anywhere where it'll let you cast your rod you can fish. You don't have to use an ability to seek out fishing spots anymore.
