I literally have an entire inventory tab filled with nothing but bait and lures of all kinds, then I have 3 other tabs full of fish (Reg/HQ) from said fishing adventures. Yeah...they need to change something with the bait I think.
At any rate though I quite like the current version...all the depth stuff was a but unnecessary.
As to 'favored' baits...there are no messages (that I've seen) that indicate a particular bite over another being more effective. I didn't get much chance to really dive into the fishing logs to see if the bait detail was listed in there or not...be a good place for it.
Some of those more expensive lures are interesting...I'm sad to see they are 1 use items like bait though...seems like they should have a 'random' chance to be lost during the fishing like before.

Oh really? I didn't get a chance to mess with them myself, but I only bought like 5 or so crow flies to do the level 20 class quest and I don't recall losing any of them. Maybe it's just something specific to those high level lures. You might want to leave a feedback post on the beta forums about this as lures are typically not expended if you catch something. I might be crazy, but I'm almost positive lures are not one-time use like bait. I only bought one Crow Fly for the LV 20 class quest and I got all of the fish needed using it. I wish the game was up; so much I wanted to test / mess around with.

It might be my misconception then, the Krull Feeders and Cage Feeders reduced by 1 every catch so perhaps they are considered 'bait' then and not lures.

well from what i understood during P4 which i only did fishing in it is that some fishes actually react to the day and night cycle and example would be Cloud cutter in Coerthes in the sea of clouds and natalan they would pop more often during day time and very less during night time.
there is also a Saltwater fishing bait that is overly good for landing big fishes IE HQ ones from what i understand , its called Yumizuno. and heres the thing to land an HQ Legendary fishes you gonna need Alot and i mean ALOOOOOOOOT of Stats because atm am standing at 233 Gathering and 220 Perception and i couldnt land Rhamphorhynchus HQ for those who want to fish Megaldon, he seems to be near vesper bay inside the imperial camp there but i couldnt fish it yet so its just a guess.
ah last thing if you wanted the tiny tortoise minion its in the Salt Strand in Lower la Noscea and did anyone been able to find mahi mahi?

Weather has also been mentioned in the past as something that would influence fishing. |

Yeah we'll get all the mysteries unlocked for this stuff pretty quick I thinks. As for maximizing stats to land the HQ legendary Fish we'll need something like:
Rod of the Luminary OR Halcyon Rod G-112 P- 64
Fisher's Gaskin (legs) G-28 P-03
Fisher's Wading Boots (feet) G-03 P-28
Fisher's Shirt (Body) G-56 P-28
Fisher's Gloves (Hands) G-42
Hamlet Puller's Hat (Head) P-56
Raptorskin Survival Belt (Waist) P-12
Alone these give 241 Gathering and 191 Perception. It also gives you 11 Materia Slots and open gear choices for Wrist, Earrings, Ring1, Ring 2, and Necklace. Each of those can hold 1 Materia so your total becomes 16 slots. So you can max Gathering at 337 or Perception at 287 or bring it even to 262 Gathering and 265 Perception. NONE of this factors in Forbidden Melding either.

Where can I find these in game? I'm assuming fishing guild level 50 missions or something. |

Yes, your math is correct that equals 21,960 Fishes (Well attempts they don't make you actually get the fish >.>). In the process of doing that you will likely get all three of the "I Caught That" (I/II/III) for catching (40/80/160) Unique fish as well as all three of the "The One That Didn't Get Away" (I/II/III) for reeling in (100/500/3000) HQ Fish. As for the Halcyon Rod I'm not sure...there is no info I've found on it (Save for its counterpart version for XI...which for those not familiar with it, you would complete a quest called "Inside the Belly" where a NPC would cut open your fish and if there were items inside it would give them to you. A Giant Donko had less than a 5% chance of having a Broken Halcyon Rod inside it, which could be used by Alchemists along with some cement, carbon fiber and glass fiber to restore it.

.. and what is the point of having 2 rods with same stats especially when one was very time consuming to get and I take it this one is a AF rod with the lame name of Halcyon from FFXI. How does that make you feel Kida and those who spent all that time on the Luminary. Wonder how easy it will be to obtain the Halcyon. It is AF right? I see it's U/U and it has luminary stats so.. Probably a lot less time consuming than catching nearly 22,000 fish. :P You have to take into consideration, several things were made grindy on purpose in 1.0 because they had to extend content for as long as they could before putting in more. ok.. editing this. So is it the AF rod? Is it replacing the luminary? Can you upgrade the stats with materia on either one? Just trying to figure out why we have 2 rods same stats.. 1 incredibly time consuming and other probably easier with a lame, unoriginal name from FFXI. There is no information on the Halcyon Rod at this time, so your guess is as good as anyone elses. My personal guess is that whatever method is used to obtain Halcyon Rod will either be expensive, or highly luck based. Alternatively, the Halcyon Rod could be upgradable in the future, whereas I highly doubt the Luminary will be (though perhaps replaced with another achievement reward). No, neither of them have materia sockets. This information applies to all of the new DoH/L Lv50 mainhand tools. Edited by user Wednesday, August 21, 2013 1:02:41 PM(UTC)

Thanks Raldo. I'm sorry I know it seems I bitch a lot about fishing but I just don't get the thinking behind some of the things they have done or haven't done. The problem is they should of never come out with the Luminary. It was an ill conceived rod put out at a time when the game was more or less in chaos. Luminary/Golden tools should of been saved for a later day with AF coming first. I'm actually glad they did not come out with fishing AF in 1.0 but this Halcyon should be just that. Just give it an original name. So now since the luminary is out what do you do.. you can't just toss out the golden items with how time consuming they were.. so many upset players. So keep the luminary which is good for up to lvl 50 and maybe some beyond then make a AF rod with less stats for those that don't want to do luminary but is better than the rose or whatever rod we had at 50. I'd make the luminary upgradable and not AF though personally. I contradict myself below but after reading this again.. I'd go AF > Luminary (upgradeable to last until) > legendary Then.. make it upgradable after some quests if you want to last you until we can start working on a endgame or legendary rod and again give it a unique name. Halcyon.. Not everything has to be based on an old FF game item. The Ayu or something from fishing history in Japan. Then give us (which they may still..it's early) a super legendary rod.. Sage of .. whatever lol. Ok I gotta get back to work but I was just kind of taken back that they did this. Honestly I don't want either one but the sad thing is I'll end up finishing both lol for the completionist sake in me. So, Kida will you also work on the Halcyon since you have the Luminary knowing it probably will be upgradable and better than the gold one? Edited by user Wednesday, August 21, 2013 1:26:21 PM(UTC)

There was a TON of things that was made obsolete with ARR's arrival. I'm not trying to downplay anyone's efforts or anything, but at the time (and still now even) the Luminary tools were the best items for DoH/DoL and they are comparable with the new tools, however they may be obtained. Technically you really don't have to worry about how he new tools are obtained unless the completionist in you makes you feel otherwise, or they later announce that that item will be used in some kind of quest later on to upgrade it. |

Considering the best crafted one you can get is the Gilded Rosewood Fishing rod and it only has G-84/P-48 that's a -28 G / -16 P respective. Quite a bit...would take 8 materia slots to compensate. (but it does come with 1 slot so I guess net-7 then) As for the grind to get the Luminary, it does sorta work with other crafts for their luminaries...take Alchemist...the final achievement is for 3000 level 41-50 synths, which basically means Shark Oil (41) using 1 Silver Shark and 1 Hammerhead Shark. It uses the least amount of shards so...that's 6000 catches right there (since I haven't seen any fishes reeled in in multiples yet >.>) Edited by user Wednesday, August 21, 2013 2:57:58 PM(UTC)
