This isn't necessarily a guide to mooching, just a little trick I found out and brief explanation on how it works.

So, your Perception stat gives you a higher chance to catch High-Quality fish (HQ Fish from now on). If you catch an HQ fish, you MAY get a chance to Mooch, depending on what fish it is. Let's take Costa Del Sol. I was fishing there, and I noticed that ONLY HQ Harbor Herrings would allow me to mooch.

So, you mooch, and you get a rarer better fish.

But wait, what happens if THAT fish is HQ? You have the chance to mooch again! And this time, for the real prize either a penultimate legendary fish, or a pure legendary fish!

Now, here's the little trick I figured out. Back to my example about Costa Del Sol. Harbor Herrings were the fish that would allow me to mooch. Costa Del Sol has fish in that area up to level 37 (Pufferfish I belive, or blowfish. One of those inflatable fish). However, Harbor Herrings (The Moochable Fish) are only level 7. Curious I equipped a level 15 lure, since all the other fish that were catchable in those zones were higher than a level 15 lure. Whaddya know? I was ONLY catching Harbor Herrings! It was MUCH easier to get what I needed. Considering that your lure has no bearing on the NEXT fish when mooching, I didn't have to worry about failing because of my lure. Within a couple casts, I had myself a legendary fish~

Hope that little mini guide helps someone somewhere.

Great information and really it highlights what I was going to post next about 'limiting' the field for fishing.

Since we no longer have 'favorite' baits it seems, the true ability to 'target' what you want will be using exactly as you point out, level of bait. What I wasn't able to really observe though was if there is a 'range' of +/- for these baits...Ovbiously if using a lvl-15 bait got yo level 7 fish, there is at least 8 points of swing there. If I want to say target only the HIGHER level fish, If I use a level 40+ bait, would a level 7 fish ignore/not bite on it?

Ahh...more mechanics to unlock. HURRAY!

This makes the inventory even more proplematic... I really hope they are giving fisher some Special place to put all the lures and stuff...
I allready have enough Problems with all the Class stuff...

I personally stoped fishing after about 10 casts... seemed to boring just trowing the Lure out and pulling it in...

But I think some of the stuff I've read on here I'm propably going to try it out again.

What use do legendary fish have?

Probably nothing yet. I don't see any recipes listed on xivdb anyway. I imagine they'll add recipes down the road, like making the Titanic Sawfish some kind of mantlepiece you can put in your house, and find other uses for the other fish.

There's a lot of potential for things they can implement to make use of the fish, such as the gutting quest that was in FFXI to where you had a chance to get a nice item or some gil.

Nice thinking there sir. As stated before, this means you need to carry more bait though :(

Good questions to be asking.

From what I've found (could be purely coincidence as I didn't do extensive testing), the closer the level of the fish to the level of the bait, the more chance you'll have to get that. I THINK I was using a level 35 or 40 ocean bait while in Del Sol before I switched to the level 15 bait, and I was mostly catching from level 25 to level 37 fish. The level 7 Harbor Herrings didn't hook very often with a higher level bait.

So basically (This sounds stupid typing as you think it would be obvious XD) your bait DIRECTLY influences what you catch based on level of bait and level of fish.

I could also be incredibly wrong on that, as I haven't really tested it much.

And yes, without a key item like tacklebox thing, it's really a burden on your inventory. I think I had a page and a half of just bait and lures. That's not a big deal if you're only fishing in ONE spot, but I was experimenting and exploring different zones and the fish really fill up your inventory space. Even more so because of HQ fish.
I mean, they basically already have a tacklebox in the game. It's just not for fishing items. The Armoury chest. Just take that same idea, and make it just for fishing goods, bait/lures, rods, fish, etc...

While we're on the topic of inventory! We definitely need an "Auto-sort" button. :P

Again I think some of this has to do with Yoshi kind of dumbing down fishing or else we'd have something like a tackle box and I don't think he intended people to put in a good half or even full day of fishing/exploring. Thus having the need to fill up you inventory.

It's unfortunate really but the tackle box would be a great idea or hell give us a cooler to put the fish in. I'd even buy the ice and beer at an outpost or guild lol. There is an auto sort button just fyi for your inventory in character settings I think.

Im working on a MASSIVE Field Compendium with all gathered items, locations, levels, NPC prices, etc....To be posted soon in its own thread.... But so far I'm over 130 different fish varieties o.O and not done yet. I know a LOT of these will likely be Quest/Leve-only fish but still...its a damn lot of inventory room >.<

Want any help with that? I logged about 200 different combinations of fish/bait (I've caught ~110 unique fish, but several weren't recorded) with the idea of putting something together once early release hits... all caught outside of quest/leves
