So I have myself the following

Which brings my stats up to 241 gathering and 191 perception. I have a bunch of cracked materia of all levels and was planning on trading my IV's in for gathering materia. Atm I am thinking slotting Head, Chest, Pants, gloves with +6 gathering materia, 10 total materia slotted for +60 bringing my gathering up to 301. Then taking my primary, belt, ring 1, ring 2, earring, wrist and neck and slotting them with +6 perception materia, 7 total for an additional 42 bringing perception up to 233.

Things would bring my totals to 301/233 before consumables. Before I did this I wanted to see what other thought. I was thinking 300 would make it easier to catch some of the harder fish in game and the 233 perception would give me a decent HQ catch rate. Any thoughts? Perhaps go a bit lower on gathering and buff it with food and raise perception?

Let me know what you guys think, I am going to wait a couple of days before I make a choice and would love some feedback.


Also tomato pie atm seems to be the best food for Gath +6% (max 15) /percep +2% (MAx +6)

A brief intro/explanation of AF+1 is needed for me, I think. I am soon to reach 50 FSH and can only assume one need commission a crafter and hope they HQ the result?

correct :) you can only get 1 AF item from lvl 50 quest. the rest is crafted.

From what I've noticed about gathering/perception, it would seem gathering increases the size of what you can pull in, while perception increases the size of what you can hook.

So if we take a fish, it goes something like this

Base Size Range - 10-20 ilms
anything over 18 ilms is HQ, so you got a 2/20 chance of HQ

add on alot of perception, and the size range increases to 10-22 ilms, still anything over 18ilms is HQ, so now you got a 4/22 chance of HQ.

Now gathering would affect this as anything over xx ilms for this fish is too big, and you would lose the fish. Add more gathering, and what you can pull in would increase.

I'm also fairly sure the level of your fishing rod affects the size of what you can pull in.

I'm also guessing that bait type not only determines which fish you hook, but also certain ones that work better in lakes,coastlines,marshes, or for Big Catch increase the max size of what you can hook.

This would also explain why on Mahi-mahi, people have been able to catch it with such low stats, wear a lv40+ rod with little perception to increase the size of what you hook, and you should have a pretty good chance of not losing it, due to its size range.
