That is the tattoo that's on all characters created during 1.0. The mark simply signifies that you "lived through the Calamity".

I have one of those tattoos as well, but I didn't play much of 1.0 - seems unfair I should get one.
Yesterday I redyed my set, body went Moss Green, Head/Hands/Feet went Mole Brown. Legs stayed undyed.

I saw someone sporting a bright orange set, kinda like fisherman rain gear:
