Has anyone had success pinpointing rainbow trout? I took up fishing just today to help easily level up cooking, and these are one of the fishies good for beginning levels. So far I've gotten Rank 1-5 in Gridania with various low level freshwater lures and bugs that I had piling up in my retainer's inventory. It seems like out of Moth Pupa, Midge Baskets, and Chocobo Flies I've had the best experiences with the fly although that might be because I waited until Rank 4 to start using it. It also seems like I get more bites for the trout when I'm at depths -3 to -5. Anyone have experience to add or hotspots for these fishies?

Forgot to add that I also have much better luck catching them when I jig on a nibble rather than waiting for a bite.

I have no specific information as I haven't been fishing these areas so much but the database say that it can be caught in Bentbranch, Gridania and Tranquil Paths. I am going to take a look at depths when I get some more time and see if I can dig out some stats about that.

I was catching them like crazy at Tranquil Paths, back when I was around rank 18-22 or so. I had fished up over 20 stacks for a friend. Unfortunately I cannot comment on the depth, since I hardly ever play around with depth.

Equivalent and easier-to-get-mats for synths for that range of cooking (5+):

Wind Shard + Tiger Cod, Merthlor Goby, Vongola Clam to make Sea Sand.

Starting out 1-5 use your zillion crayfish, pipira, maiden carp to make River Sand.

That Grilled Trout must have some benefit though, thats a Grade 3 fish being used, so you could make and stockpile them until we know what they do! Another similar type of recipe is the Raw Oyster. What are your secrets fishy food?

Straight answer of the original question - any freshwater bait or lure on the grade 3 water in Gridania gives you a lot of trout.

@ Lao: my cooking was above really needing these to skill up even a bit ago when I posted (now rank 18). I was mainly wanting them for stats so I'd get double benefit of leveling up fishing, until I could get to fish that would skill up my cooking better. :) If we're trusting the stats that ZAM has on their site, the trout is good for anyone crafting or DDing in parties as it gives accuracy and control. My bf goes through them like candy so I was trying to mainly pinpoint those as they're in high demand with us right now.

I do make Raw Oyster whenever I get the materials for them but I'm unsure of a good place to go for the Rothlyt Oysters, and any tips on depth/bait I should be using. I think if I get that figured out then pinpointing sun lemons will be no problem. ^^

I know sea sand and river sand have a huge range of fishies that I can use for skillups but I'm trying to avoid those in favor of stat foods, so I can distribute them to LS members and get more use out of them.

Before too long I'll be making Crab Balls and likely passing out stacks of those to the LS fisherpeople. ^^ I can't get the river crabs myself yet (I think) but know someone who can. I'm already getting a couple stacks of salmon saved up to cook those in the next couple of levels too, more accuracy/control food. :)

Rainbow trout would be one of those fish that you can pinpoint during the level 20 fishing leve in Tranquil Paths (gridania) area using a salt water lure (cage feeder or floating minnow). Unfortunately, you can only pinpoint them for 30 minutes.

I'll save them for you though, I've been vendoring them :( but, I think I have some on my manmoogle. I'll also save those river crabs for you, I think I vendored some of those too...can't help it, bagspace for fishers and packrats makes me /sadface.
