I had a look at the numbers from the DoL Log and how Moonphases influenced whether or not fish bites...

So far there are 5259 fishing logs.

This is catches at the various moonphases:

New Moon: 1008
Waxing Crescent: 549
First Quarter: 634
Waxing Gibbous: 882
Full moon: 809
Waning Gibbous: 613
Last Quarter: 401
Waning Crescent: 363

I have to assume that people either think new moon is the best time to fish OR they don't enter information about moonphase when logging (since this is the default choice).

When we look at the number of lines where nothing bites we get the following:

New Moon: 312
Waxing Crescent: 180
First Quarter: 256
Waxing Gibbous: 257
Full moon: 252
Waning Gibbous: 207
Last Quarter: 130
Waning Crescent: 130

Putting this information we get the following "Nothing bites":

New Moon: 30.95%
Waxing Crescent: 32.78
First Quarter: 40.37
Waxing Gibbous: 29.13
Full moon: 31.14
Waning Gibbous: 33.76
Last Quarter: 32.41
Waning Crescent: 35.81

This is rather interesting as this shows that the best time to fish is actually (and to me a surprise) Waxing Gibbous. Now we have to be aware that as with all statistical information nothing can be said for sure but it may be an indicator... New moon should also be considered but you will get nearly two more bites with Waxing gibbous after 100 tries.

one possible solution to the default is to remove the default.   then they have to click an option in order to submit.   if they click submit and haven't selected a phase, make an error thing that says the information still needs a selection :)

that will force people to choose something, and they should then be clicking the correct one :)

That is a good idea... I think I will implement this...

Fishing during a new moon was working well for all 3 of my characters as far as levequests go, so your results seem pretty accurate to me. I will have to try during waxing gibbous now though.

A lot of people may not keep up with weather changes while fishing or gathering either. I miss it sometimes myself but usually give a quick glance each time I'm inputting something. Normally the weather in FFXIV lasts a good while so that shouldn't be too big a deal, but still a small factor to consider.

I also like the idea of having to select a default weather and moon phase. :)

I have made it so that nothing is chosen from the start but if the user make no choice he is alerted and not able to submit... Hope this will make even better logs d(',^) That being said I don't know how big this problem is but now people will have to make a decision at least.

Thanks for sharing some early results Kida! The New Moon numbers should be cleaner from here on out, I'm going to look past those for now. Personally I've found New Moon to be the worst but once you are in those middle 5 phases things are fine. Nice to see the pickup around the middle three phases, I always liked the "OH FULL MOON LETS GO RIDE THE BOAT!" feeling from FFXI.

Thank you for that numbers. I still have not noticed any major changes from fishing on certain phases. Same thing goes for crafting. I never was one to pay much attention to that stuff in ffxi and things worked out great. Same thing for crafting. I hq'd some of my best and rarest stuff on the most random days/moon phases and got great skill ups even on new moon instead of full and I did that for over 6 years.

But I'll keep an eye out for any major noticable differences down the road and input what I can.  Testing, testing and more testing never hurts.

Update with new numbers from the log (based on 12047 fishing logs):

Logs for fishing at the different moonphases:
New Moon: 1668
Waxing Crescent: 965
First Quarter: 1238
Waxing Gibbous: 1586
Full moon: 1690
Waning Gibbous: 1857
Last Quarter: 1665
Waning Crescent: 1378

Counts of "Nothing bites":
New Moon: 542
Waxing Crescent: 286
First Quarter: 417
Waxing Gibbous: 517
Full moon: 608
Waning Gibbous: 625
Last Quarter: 700
Waning Crescent: 467

Resulting in:
New Moon: 32.49 (was 30.95)
Waxing Crescent: 29.64 (was 32.78)

First Quarter: 33.68 (was 40.37)
Waxing Gibbous: 32.98 (was 29.13)
Full moon: 35.98 (was 31.14)
Waning Gibbous: 33.66 (was 33.76)
Last Quarter: 42.04 (was 32.41)
Waning Crescent: 33.89 (was 35.81)

The funny thing is that the numbers look pretty different than the first time I pulled them. Now Last Quarter and Full Moon are the times to avoid while first quarter looks a lot better. New moon and Waxing Crescent looks like the times to fish now. I don't know if the fact that the average fisher has a much higher level now but it is to me strange that these numbers have changed so. The only one that is close to what it was back then is Waxing Gibbous only changing 0.1 percent.
