I max melded my gear but I can't catch big fish. I take it the forager's rod is required?
Please let me know.
My gathering rating is 321 with food (NQ Trappers Quiche.) |

The foragers rod is not required (in order to obtain the rod, you have to trade in some "big fish" so that would be a bit of a catch-22 if it were required).
However, you do need to complete the quest "Beast of Brewer's Beacon" first (Lv50 FSH quest that you can pick up at the Fishing Guild after you complete the Lv50 class quest that awards the fishing rod). |

thanks for responding.
I completed the quest however, I keep getting the message: You do not have sufficient gathering rating to catch this fish, every time I get a Big Fish. |

There are likely two tiers of big fish, similar to how there are two tiers of new gathering nodes for BTN/MIN. Try going after the HQ Silver Sovereigns (I think?) for the rod first, then go after whatever you're after right now. Disclaimer: I am not an avid fisher, and haven't bothered with any big fish stuff yet. Edited by user Tuesday, May 13, 2014 12:19:11 AM(UTC)

Raldo is right. You should definetly be able to catch some of the big fish. Navigator's Brand you should already have caught if you have completed the quest (The Beast at Brewer's Beacon) and this one is available at 301 Gathering as are some of the other big fish.
As Raldo suggests try and go catch the Silver Sovereign. You can find it at Oschon's Torch in Lower La Noscea (teleport to Moraby Drydocks). These should be relatively easy to catch with 321 Gathering. You may want to look into raising your perception as you will need these in HQ. 20 Silver Sovereigns in HQ can be traded into the new fishing rod (Forager's Fishing Rod).
Incedently, I just got my 20th HQ Silver Sovereign today and traded them in for the new rod. I caught app. one Silver Sovereign every hour so it took some time to get. I must say that having fought my way to a Rod of the Luminary before A Realm Reborn this was a piece of cake. Nothing hard about it and I must admit I feel rather sad putting a rod on the shelf that I spent more than three months on. BUT the stats of the new rod is way better and we all knew that one day a new and better rod would come. |

Just another question: Where have you been trying to fish (when you got the message that you didn't have enough gathering)?
Also if you get the 20 Silver Sovereign the guy you want to talk to is Talan who can be found in Revenant's Toll (Mor Dhona). He is also the man you need to talk to if you want the gathering tools for miner and botanist, the hat for all the gathering classes, the new crafting tools and the new recipe books with master recipes for crafters.
If you are trying to get the Forager's hat you will need another 10 HQ Silver Sovereigns but you may want to consider trading in the mining or botanist items as this will be easier to find than the fish. |

Faerie Queen (Empty Heart Lower La Noscea) and Junkmonger (Skull Valley Western La Noscea) were the ones I kept losing.

Junkmonger should be possible to catch with 321 but I think Faery Queen requires 351. She is one of the tough ones so wait with her until you have your 20 HQ Silver Sovereigns and get your rod. |
