Hi all,
I had mentioned in another thread that I was going to post my results from doing the Promising Fishing Points leves while using a bait type opposite of the water that you're fishing in, so here they are. Fresh water spots were tried with a floating minnow and salt water spots were checked with a crow fly and/or chocobo fly. Please keep in mind that if you use the CORRECT bait type in these waters your results will vary and will not produce the same catch every time.
Grade 1 Limsa Lominsa Leve - Tiger cod Grade 2 Limsa Lominsa Leve - White coral
Grade 4 Limsa Lominsa - Blue Coral (thanks Rescuer and Fallenbane. confirmed last night when I hit 25 fishing :))
Grade 1 Gridania Leve - Tree Toad Grade 2 Gridania Leve - Dart Frog Grade 3 Gridania Leve - Rainbow Trout
Grade 1 Uldah Leve - Maiden Carp Grade 2 Uldah Leve - Pipira
Grade 5 Uldah Leve - Striped Goby (thanks Skiz)
Assuming SE doesn't adjust this in some way, once I get higher rank and also once the other cities all have level 20+ fieldcraft leves available, I'll post my findings. For those of you who have access to the level 30+ leves and would like to try this out and post your findings, feel free and I'll update the original post. Tammany tzu here....
Interesting idea. Please continue to post the results.
I do your experiment, but only because I'm cheap and use whatever is in the bag at the time...or what I have harvested along the ways.
(hee-hee, which may help to explain why I get wierd fishies for where I am)

Cedarwood (grade 4) lvl 30 leve (the promising fishing spots one), using a crow fly will get blue coral pretty much the entire leve. Edited by user Monday, October 25, 2010 1:47:38 PM(UTC)

By pretty much do you mean that's every catch that you've pulled up or were you pulling up something else with that bait? I only ask because with the examples above, those were the ONLY fish I pulled up with those baits listed. |

Very interesting study, I hope you continue to post the results from it. And I'm *very* glad to find out about using the opposite type of bait on leves. This should produce much better results. ^^ |

While this is somewhat interesting am I missing the value? These fish are all pretty much worthless, and leve's I do I only get 3-5 casts per school/yellow spot before it disperses. Does this info include just the spots before they disperse or the entire leve. Maybe as the grade gets higher they might be a little more valuable right now before there are a lot of higher level fishers, but the loot your fishing up I either npc, or used it to level cul(not saying much as everything you fish up you can level cul pretty much). Maybe i'm missing the point. I also think that's something that will be fixed very quickly, if it's truly a guaranteed way to catch money fish at higher leve's. |

It's true most fish you catch can level culinarian, through making either river sand or sea sand. But for people that want to level it to get actual stat food from it, you need to target specific fish. Also, alchemists use a lot of fish to make potions/powders/glue, which are then in turn used to make items for just about every other class out there. Some of these fish can be hard to pinpoint outside of the leve areas, so this is just an extra bit of boosted time allowed to catch those fish. Due to the limit of leves you can get per day and the amount of time alloted to fish during them, I don't see it as a way to cheat the system. It's rather like a little bonus of time you can use to help out another of your professions in a small way. |

@ Colonel
As things work right now, once a school disperses, you can still fish in the same spot until the leve times out, so you can technically catch these same fish for 30 minutes straight. Right now most of the fish listed aren't particularly useful, but dart frogs are nice for alchemy, maiden carp and rainbow trout can be turned into foods for buffs, white coral can be used in GS (although it's pretty shard costly), and the rest can be used to level cooking via making river/sea sand, which can in turn be turned into other things.
I'm not sure if they will "fix" this or not. Until they do, I'll continue to post results so that people can target these specific fish if they need to use them for something. If they fix this, then I'll just delete the post. As I don't have much data on the higher level leves yet, I'm not sure if there will be any fish here that are particularly expensive apart from the Dart Frogs so far. i'm familiar with the recipes and items you've mentioned, i see what is being said. while not an effective way to consistently catch any of these. it could provide you 30 minutes worth of what you can reel in of a given fish if you already have the leve and/or need those fish. good info for beginners wanting to raise cul and alch, tiger cod as well as trout and carp you listed cortez can be cooked buffs. good stuff.
easy to level gs as well for free with your sea and river sand -> fine sand leftovers from cul. |
