Congrats Rescuer!! It's important to consider that there is most likely no benefit over the Rattan Rod from using this before you are Rank 42. Similarly, you need not pine for the Rattan rod before 32, you will not be penalizing yourself sticking with the Bamboo.
Having said that, its fun to have the Rattan rod at 31, just so you can feel it kick like a turbo boost in when you turn 32. Something fun to do is as you approach 31, run to the ocean cliffs just by Camp Bald Knol (SW). Suffer as you struggle to get that last 2000 SP and then watch what happens when you flip the grade.
The remaining question is, does using equipment above your rank scale down to the appropriate rank gear, or is there a penalty of some kind. Clearly there is increased price of repairs but I really think there might be something else (this was the case in FFXI when you scaled down for things like level capped CoP missions).
At the moment this is the number one thing I want to know!!!
I've decided to hold off on the Yew Fishing Rod until I hit 42, although this is more to add a little goal to spice things up a bit, not so much a worry about the possibilty of a penalty.

Is your sig accurate? It would seem to me that using a rattan rod at that level would actually give you WORSE stats than a bamboo. I know I equipped a rattan at r26 but my stats went down from bamboo, so I'm giving it a few more levels.
Thanks for this datapoint mr folkster!! This affects all gear in the game so keep an eye out for intelligent discussions on this topic so us Fishers can work whats best.
