I just realized today that I have not killed a single mob in FFXIV so far. I have only been doing DoL and DoH. I have been gathering and crafting all the time in FFXIV. I do not have one single DoW or DoM activated as I have never picked up a weapon.

So I got to thinking: Am I the only one who hasn't picked up a weapon or is this a common thing?

I know I can't be the only one but I would like to hear from other people if you are in the same situation. I really like the gathering aspect of the game and I really don't feel that I am missing out on anything but maybe I need to do some kind of DoW/DoM if I want to be able to go further.

I am starting to run in to mobs that are dangerous to me even though they don't seem that tough. I really want to be able to run around the game freely and to a certain extent this is certainly possible but will it be required of me to be able to slay high level mobs to get to top level of the gathering classes?

I think it is great the way that I can run around and not be bothered by most mobs but we all know there are wolves in some areas and the one grade 9 fishing place I found in Thanalan was guarded by a demon LOL. I was able to try out the waters but I had no interest in staying as this would mean certain death before long.

Kida I was the same way for good while. I solo'd up some jobs to 10,11 then every friday I do leves or pt with some buddies from ffxi. However, we all have crafting or have land jobs that are higher lvls or usually both.

I see plenty of people with melee jobs in the 30-40's but either they have no crafting jobs or any that are very high lvl or they play 24/7 till they hit surplus AND craft to high levels which amounts to no life cause I put in alot of time and efficiently and I can't imagine being lvl 45+ right now in anything lol.

This game is so crafting first, fighting second unless you plan on paying for repairs and gear, have a ls mate who makes and repairs everything for you or use up your gear till it's dead and toss it and buy more lol.

..(lack of anima and I refuse to pay 10-15k for a tele is also a downside for now but with chocs and airships just like in ffxi it will get better but is very time consuming and just a complete beating)

So most people craft for gil and repairs and to make their own stuff. Thus unlike ffxi lvling melee/mage/tank jobs is not just able to be given priority. Also, compared to ffxi it's not like you know the big pt place is in the dunes, then qufim, then jungle, etc which for me was something to look forward to as well and tons of fun with a lot of other people around.. lag or not that was fun as hell to me.

There are pt spots and people who pt but they'll have to make changes to that system or I think it will always take a backseat to everything else. Problem is you need a fighting job. You need to be able to switch jobs to kill some mobs even if you are just trying to get somewhere to fish..sometimes ..and that will be more prevalent later on. Unless they give us a weapon. Throwing rocks doesn't cut it.

I'm kind of finding a big turnoff in this game is how little fighting I've done. Another reason for that feeling is you can get every piece of armor at any level and equip it even if you should not be wearing it yet. I always enjoyed having something to look forward to other than new ws's and abilities. I wanted to get to lvl 50, 60 or 75 to get that new armor and be able to put it on or that new AF.

It's just a different game. At this point it's becoming quite tough for me to keep a high level of interest. Too bad Call of Duty Black Ops is out today cause I'm all over that. Getting on ffxi with my buddies to go do rank or other missions/quests was great or pt'ing to lvl up and get new armor was great. Right now there just isn't much to look forward to or for inspiration for me.

But it's early so hopefully some sweet fishing quest for rare rod/item or other stuff will be implemented over the next year.  But for now I do not get that initial South gustaberg or dunes feeling like I did back when ffxi first came out.  I keep thinking I want to get my pug or glad or lncer lvl'd up higher but just not feeling the motivation.

Me too :)

Maybe I'll someday get bored and grab a weapon to kill innocent rats and marmots.

I've got Lancer at 19, and a few other jobs at 10, but that was from when the game came out. I haven't actually done very much combat for quite a while. If I get on Lancer again it will be to farm wind shards and crystals.. lol

Well put Kida...

And nothing wrong with crafting full time either.

Except...like u said...later when you get attacked.

Luckily not too many monsters yet...also unluckily for Square.

As far as I go, I level my main and my subordinate fighters at about the same ratio as my crafters.

So...ALL of my crafting (every one they have) is over 10, and under 18 atm.  (most at 14-15)

My fighters (actually "casters" who don't get points for pt. heals it seems anyway...are at about 17-20.

I don't have any problem with being able to wear any gear at any level...but

There does need to be specific "special" gear for race and job...

(lol--->other than UNDERWEAR!)  Or perhaps:  "Epic Undies"... (hee-hee)

Serious tho--

The crafting side of the game is boobs!  Well done.

But...see it this way.  Well done IF:

If others are out fighting too much to craft and repair--thus forming a symbiotic tit-for-tat.

That component is absolutely absent so far.

Highest non crafting job I have at the moment is a thaumaturge lvl 8. The primary reason for this is my laptop. The beta benchmark scored in the 400s and well it is very laggy. I tried to solo but I ended up dying because I would skip animations and my reaction time was too late. So I decided to fish, that's what I used to do in FFXI.

So at the moment I am lvling crafts and fishing all the way. I've been killed a couple of times by high lvl mobs but oh well... revenge shall be mine when I upgrade my PC.

btw Kida I would like to join the LS but I can never get you online. name on game is Sir Urmele.

Within the first few weeks of the release i got most of the classes leveled up 5-10. Then started working on my 3 favored classes (CRP,FSH,ARC) at about 14 i noticed a great deal of CRP's surpassing me. I decided it would be better to just stop and focus on FSH, as i did not have a great deal of time to play.

Since i no longer have a serious motivation for CRP, and i can repair my poles, i sell my shards for gil and use it to upgrade my gear.

like others, the only real time i exp on my DoW class is if someone in my LS makes a group. maybe once every two weeks ill grind ARC for 5-6 hrs.

So far i think i have made better progression focusing on FSH and leaving everything else in the dust. I have 1.5m, decent gear, and a good LS to carry me through the high lvl guild leves.
(as long as i sell my shards and fish within the LS BigGrin )

to be honest i don't see a need to level a DoW/DoM class for DoL.
at least not at this stage in the game.
Personally after i get one DoL class to 50 i will focus on a DoW/DoM.

Also i found if i get lucky with my path/dowse i can outrun most aggressive mobs. I have fished in some dangerous areas, but i usually die a couple times getting there. if you stand at a distance and watch the pathing of some of the aggressive mobs you can usually find a small spot to fish between them with no aggro.
Bait the mob out by hitting the farthest distance of their aggro range, lose them then use that window to sneak in to the dangerous fishing spot.

yes i know i tend to ramble on, tl;dr Laugh

welcome Romper to the forum. Yes as you mentioned fisherman find ways to get around the dangerous mobs. Eventually they leave you alone. Good luck with your fisher job and glad to have you on the forum and your input.
