Lately I've noticed JP players on my server have different catch noises and light pulse animations when doing the "hold the fish up after a catch" thing. Instead of being a "ding" with a soft white pulse, it's a sharper, more crystalline sound, accompanied by a sharper, brighter, more crystalline light pulse.

I can only assume this difference is the key to gathering crystals, not shards. However, I haven't a clue how they're doing it. I've seen rank 14 fisherman with the new sound, so it's not about being high rank. I've seen fishermen with no points in their elemental stats get it, so it's not about having high enough elemental stats.

I've scoured their history on Lodestone, and found no quest or somesuch out of the ordinary.

I thought for a second it was about attuning to all the aetheryte in the area, but the history search proved that wrong, too.

So help, folks. Let's solve the mystery of the crystalline catch sound/pulse.

That's weird, I thought everyone had it. Mine changed after the same patch that changed the "crit success" synth noise, so I figured it was intended. Everyone doesn't get the new sound when they catch fish?

After playing around a little bit, it looks like I don't get the new noise on tough catches (the ones where you struggle to reel it in), only on stuff that's easy to catch.

Can anyone else confirm?

I think its just like the crafting synths sounds that have changed. When I get a successful synth (20% normal increase) smithing I get a new sound as well.

Apparently there is a successful catch as opposed to just a catch when fishing. I have been mining quite extensively and don't notice a change in my mining sounds. I will listen closer tonight (I often have music on in the background).

Do you know if this correlates to catching the correct fish you "aimed" for (At the appropriate depth)?

The new synth noise is a "crit" success - it's a successful synth with zero durability loss; doesn't necessarily correlate to the percentage. The old synth success noise means you may have succeeded, but you still lost some durability.

As far as the fishing goes, I checked exactly what you're asking - did the new catch noise line up with catching the fish I was aiming for. Answer is, no. I also checked if it was when I fished up shards, answer is no. The only thing that happened is I only got the "old" noise when I had one of those tough catches that shows your character struggling to reel in the fish.

Well, it was an idea. Thanks for following up on it Folkster. Haven't fished in months it seems (r13 only). I did get a friend to make me a willow rod just to have in case I wanted to test the waters again. Then i proceeded to try without bait... Confused
