Good Morning All!

Having taken Fishing to 50 (the hard way...LOTS of time spent leveling off of 'lost fish' during heavy surplus and fatigue @ 40SP a cast) I have been covering the lands looking for unique fishing opportunities.

I believe I've found a Liquid Gold Mine (SP not Gil)!

In Western La Noscea at (5,20) there is a cave that heads south towards The Isles of Umbra. As you exit the cave south and turn to your right, over the cliff is a Saltwater Grade 10 Body of water. As some of you might know, grade 6-10 offer (to date 12/31/10) low-level catches and are usually dangerous to fish at.

This spot (490,-1850) has only been able to catch 1 thing for me (i'm sure other combos of bait and depths would get something else...) Merlthor Goby's.

*UPDATE* It appears the crabs _can_ wander around the corner and get at your by the entrance. Best if you can blast past the crabs at full speed (use Dowse) and bolt to a quieter place to do your fishing :D

==========
The Setup:
==========

I was using a Yew Rod but I believe that Rattan or Bamboo would work ok. I have a total of 99 Gathering, 76 Perception, and 81 Output. I believe this spot would see OK bite rates with less.

The lure to use is the Sinking Minnow. Get your hands on this bad boy. Merlthor Goby bite on this fast and hard. You will get the new "Fast" catch message:

"The fish seem to be biting on your Sinking Minnow"
"Something big hits your line" <----(This one depends but happens oftan)

Set your depth to (-3) as this is their sweet spot. Again in over 50 catches i got 50 of these in a row.

Now comes the bueaty of this: This fish is a Rank 1 fish. As we know, SP granted from a grade is based on the grade itself, not how hard the fish was to catch. Only the grade matters. Being grade 10 (I haven't found anything higher yet) at Rank 50 I was getting 150 SP!

The combination of Fast Bites (no waiting), Quick Jig's (Level 1 fish can be 1-shot Jigged up), and Highest SP should make this a great spot for leveling.

Keep an eye on the Snipper...on occasion he will come close to poking his head around the corner but he never saw me (Again, get as close to the cave as possible and face almost parallel with the cliff to get the (!) icon and begin fishing.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if this works for you, as I am already R50 I can't really test it on lower levels, but again, I believe that if you are at Optimal Rank for the Bait (34) you should have NO trouble getting bites and SP.

You will need to blow past Clippers. Just run at normal speed and go around them as if they were non-Agressive mobs, they are slow to react and as long as you dont stop you should be fine, there should be 3 of them. You will pass an NPC named AIMILIENS and there is a bridge Once you cross the bridge run up the hill passed Qiqirn mercenaries. They do not aggro. Running up this hill you will lose the crab aggro. Come back down and cross the second bridge. This place is now 100% safe from the aggro crabs.

Following OP's instructions for fishing this spot. My experience here is same as OP, except I also pull Vongola clams at this spot.

Also note when you first start casting you may get a string of no bites. But once you get your first bite, the catch rate will become much much better.

Hey I've been doing another method of speed fishing, but this seems like it will be better, could you guys post a SS of you ingame at the spot? I'm at where I think you mean, but the co-ords you give for the resource maps dont seem to match up.

Thanks, Drar.

So long as you are in Grade 10 waters when you cast you should be fine. There are no schools there to worry about so you should be ok if you find a nice safe spot.

Good point about getting past the crabs, I forget they are slow to argo :p

yea K i've found a lot of safe spots, but I don't seem to get a super great bite rate, would this be because im only R31 and the lures are R34?

Thanks.

Using Optimal rank and having decent PIE + perception/gathering seems to help with bite rate.

The same principles apply to other grades and bait/lures. I haven't found other combo's like this, but i'm sure it could be done. Grades 6-10 all have low level fish in them only..nothing big at all. You can find a grade 7 or 8 and use a bait you are optimized for and perhaps get similar results. Again these grades are usually harder to get to, but Widow Cliffs (south of Ceaderwood) is grade 8 fishing, and if you can get there, there are some safe spots along the coast to fish.

Tested this spot with succes at 28. Getting 142 to 167 fishing experience and around 600 regular experience.
Was getting others fishes but didnt set my line to -3. Vongola's Clams, Melthor Gobies, Ocean Cloud and Tiger Cod.
I ll update that if needed.
Big thanx to Truvy =)

The last time it was pointed out that easy catches in high grades were a goldmine for SP, they nerfed 100% kelp/crayfish rate when using the wrong bait.

What I really mean to say is, are you sure it's a good idea to let too many people in on this? You don't want bots and abusers to make the ability just vanish and ruin it for everyone. I'd be sorely disappointed if this was nerfed too soon, I've found a rather great spot for it.

Absolutly a good idea. Botting comes with its own risks, nothing i can do about them but report em. As far as the wrong bait thing, that was just broken and needed to be fixed. That fix, also brought about the sweetspots and improved messages.

SE's bad for creating these higher grades for fishing (the other two don't have em) and not putting anything challenging in them to catch.

All dozen or so of the legendary fish arn't in the game (at least they haven't been caught as far as I know) and if a handful of DoL faithfulls level fishing quicker using this method and that prompts SE to modify the higher grade (brining better fishy) I'm all for it :p

However, I doub't that will happen. AS it is, these higher grades are MUCH harder to get to and tend to be more dangerous. This specific place was simply the easiest of the Grade 10's to get to without dying. Although there is a fairly safe spot near Twin Pools surrounded by the Inferno Drakes, but its a pain to get too.

/sigh. If these spots all get nerfed in the next update, you're going to have the world's angriest moose on your hands.

Moraby Bay. 5 minute walk from Limsa and there's an Aether Gate right next to the water. Homepoint at the Moraby aether, and when you want to go home, use the gate to 1-Anima tele to Bearded Rock.

As long as you make it past the one clipper guarding the aether and get to the wall of the cliff face, there's no danger. Ever.

Vongola Clams, Malm Kelp, Tiger Cod, Merlthor Goby and Ocean Cloud. Personally, I use Floating Minnows.

141~167SP per catch, 600 Phys at all times, bite every other cast.

If it's "their bad" that implies that an error in judgment has been made, which makes it all the more likely that they'd want to fix that error. Personally, seeing as the SP is so nerfy already, I'd probably quit if they screwed this one up, too.

in regards to the OP's location:
idk if the update screwed with the pathing of the crabs at this spot. but i was 1 shotted today after 5 min of fishing. it seems as if the crab travels all the way around the corner now.

I'm going to try and use Wavekin eluder and see if that buys me enough time for it to pass me up.

i often don't get much chance to fish grade 6+ in general due to the fish demand my linksell alchemists have on me currently. but i do enjoy getting decent SP outside of lev's when i can fit it in. i remember passing by some grade 9's early on in the game, there wasn't much aggressive mob population by the spots back then. but this defiantly does give me some encouragement to revisit some of these locations.

keep up the good work.
PS: the SP @r41 was between 139 and 150, 600 phy.

ninja edit:
revisited The Isle of Umbria. can confirm getting past the crabs with ease, its virtually impossible to die once your past them. a few goobbues here and there but not much. for all the trouble of getting here, id pick up the atherite and just port. defiantly worth the travel time to fish here regardless.

btw i checked grade 8 and 9 waters and it seems as if the bite rate was quite low compared to the grade 10.

rank 48

been here about an hour. 144-155 SP per fish. but bite rate isn't completely great. maybe 1/3 of casts -_-

you can't fish on the exact coordinates in the OP cause of the agro crabs, so i'm just on the other side of the bridge here.

Yeah updated the OP to show it probably best to blow past the crabs (Dowse) and get to a safe spot on the other side :D

I agree the bite rate isn't ideal, but the low level fish make up for it. Better than skilling up in grade 5 saltwater in the late 30's low 40's imo.

Plus the trash fish makes me not feel so bad when i drop them.

We made some changes... what's on tv could have a major impact on the results...
