I have come into a great quantity of free Crab Ball bait.

I'm Rank 20.

I assume "shallows" means "beach" as opposed to cliff or dock fishing.
Can someone direct me to a Grade 3 or 4 shallow ocean fishing spot?

I tried Bloodshore but that ended up being Grade 8 (if I recall).

I believe that to be just 'flavor text' and has no real impact on the use of the bait. Crab balls should work great for any Saltwaters you choose to fish.

I would agree with Truvy... I don't think there is any difference.

Could be interesting to know for sure though.

For now, I've yet to see anything that it doesn't catch that Floating Minnows dont, although there 'seems' to be a bit of difference in bite rate. Still workin that bit out.

I've always thought that shallow means it favors fishies that have sweetspot closer to surface (+).

Bloodshore:
The fish seems to be biting on Crab Balls. Bianaq Bream, sweetspot +1.
Just an idea..

Their _could_ certainly be a bit of that to be sure...as it stands, here are the baits/lures that make mentions of something (condition) other than simply Freshwater, Saltwater, or All Purpose:

Code:

Lugworm - "Ocean Fishing"
Crayfish Ball - "River Fishing"
Pill Bug - "Coastline Fishing"
Goby Ball - "Ocean Fishing"
Crab Ball - "Ocean Shallow Fishing"
Herring Ball - "Shark Fishing"

I tend to want to believe that there is no advantage (other than bite rate of various fish) when using the correct bait in the approprate waters. If you review the above mentioned baits, all but 1 (the crayfish ball) are used for Saltwater...hardly seems like a 'fair' distribution in 'special effects' should it exist.

I would believe that crab balls are better suited to catching Bream because its a type of bait they like, as opposed to it being because its for 'shallow' fish and they are caught at +1. As it is, I'm on the coast of Bloodshore now with some crab balls in my pocket (2 stacks left) and some spoon lures fishing for bream specifically. I am getting currently a large distribtion on the crab balls (50 into it) across the board (at +1)...Sea Pickles, Nautalus, Bream, Oysters and occasionally kelp. The bream and oysters are being the most common and about equal in their bites, dispite the oysters being -4. Switching over the spoon lures, so far (about 60 into it) its about the same distribution of Oysters and Bream, but much fewer of the others. Weather has been the same and moon.

Too early to tell, small sample at the moment. But I'll update my thread on bait and bite rates as I collect mroe info here. (the bream are working to get my Cul up to make some Herring Balls....I keep hearing on various boards that big sharkies can be caught, and perhaps we need this bait...so worth a shot).

Wow you put a lot of effort into this answer. ^^

I *really* appreciate that. I know where to come when I have gathering questions.

I haven't set aside the time to burn through my 5-6 stacks some random Japanese cook unloaded on me (free) but now I'll probably just spam them at Bloodshore until I get closer to 25. I tried some Grade 4 (Cassi) fishing at R20 (with full gear and Phys Level 50, Piety 100+). It was a tad worse than the SP per hour at Bloodshore and I can't Alchemy the Grade 4 fish very well yet.

I'll dive into the Crab Ball bait without much further ado.

I do have a nagging feeling (call me OCD) that it does, or is intended to in the future, have some deeper meaning than simply flavor text, but there are lots of things in this game that I assume will go somewhere later on that go almost nowhere now (Grade 7+ Fishing Nodes for example).

Most certainly...quite a few neat places to fish (fresh and Salt) that are grade 6 - grade 10. I imagine these will eventually have the dozen or so legendary fish in them. (hope so at least).
