So things were going ok in Gridania up to level 10 or so, and then everything just went tits up. I'm currently R16, wearing Sheepskin Jerkin/Culottes/Tarred Leather Hat/Leather Survival Belt/Dodoskin Workboots/Cotton Work Gloves, using a Willow Rod: and I can't seem to catch a dang thing.

I'm trying the Rank 3's near Bloodshore, using either Lugworms or Floating Minnows. I cast, Nibble ... wait. Bite ... JIG! Hit it at the 75% mark (from left), get a msg that the fish is tired! Good, tired fish should be easy to catch .. right? Hit the exact same spot again with 50% stamina remaining, and poof. Stamina goes away, lose the fish, 10 times out of 10.

Sometimes I'll hit the 75% mark and get the 'hooked' message, so I try my next jig at 50% or 40%, and poof, lose the fish. I'm not even getting a 'taking in/taking out' line msg.

I tried raising my PIE to 40, then used my ARC traits to bump it up another 15, so it's at 66 now. DEX is at 120. Rod is repaired, extremely frustrating.

I'm making the 11000 SP needed for level, 62 SP at a time >< Is this normal?

Just for giggles I tried the rank 1 and 2 spots around LL and Skull Valley, and I had *slightly* better results, catching Kelp. But still, 7/10 of the fish got away.

There are a couple of things about this to factor.

1) R16 is not 'quite' enough for consistant Grade3 fishes. Espically if you get one of the larger ones on the line, you simply use up too much Remainder. Maybe wait till closer to 18 or so before going from Grade 2 to 3.

2) Bait helps. If you are R16, use floating minnows for sure. Also set your depth for the 'sweet spot' of the weakest fish in the body of water. For example: Straight east of Bloodshore (grade 3 non-school) has 5 fish

(+1) Bianaq Bream (21)
(-4) Malm Kelp (4)
(-4) Rothlyt Oysters (28)
(-4) Sea Pickle (24)
(-2) Nautalus (26)

Now, as you can see there are some larger rank (the number after their name) fish in Grade 3 here. Setting your depth for -4 to get kelp would be ok, but the sweet spot is shared with 2 other catchs that are too hard for your to reel in. (Remainder depletion is partially calculaded based on this rank). Therefore, I suggest setting your depth to +1 for the Bianaq Bream. 18-21 is only 3 diff and you'll still occasionally get kelp too. Just keep in mind, that if you get quick remainder depletion, its likely one of the big ones on the line.

3) Fatigue (not Surplus). Fatigue happens ONLY to gathering classes. Over X period of time you will start to insta-fail on jigs, and remainders will fully deplete even when you have pleanty and you know you are on the right spot. Its anti-bot code for resources. Nothing you can do about it (except level at 1/2 the SP for fails ....did that a LOT to R50 >.> *cough*) If you find you all of a sudden are failing when you were catching them, stop for a while. Time makes it go away.

4) PIE is more for Offhand, and Dex will certainly help your Main Hand.

Thanks Truvy, it does sound like Fatigue to me. I was fishing like a fiend when I found it was pretty much required to progress my 27CUL/31ALC. I was also hitting +1 for the Bream (R27 CUL recipe), and didn't land a single one in about 2 hours, so that must have been why. Oh well, time for leves and shopping!

I don't really mind fatigue, I just really dislike the fact that there's no gauge or even notice about it, same with surplus ranks ><
