Its a simple enough question really, but the task is seemingly so difficult.  I'm accomplished at both the Mining and Logging mini-game's.  Yet for the life of me, I cannot catch a fish to save my life.  It would better for me to say, I cannot hook a fish to save my life.  I've spend over 3 hours going level by level, degree by degree through the water columns. I get nibbles and even bites, but every time the moment I jig..."You are unable to catch the fish" AAARGHHH!!!!  My bait has been Lugworms, Bloodworms, and even Moth Grubs.

I want to fish dagnabbit!!!

HELP!!!!

I am not the best to answer this question as I am myself not in beta. I have read some guides though and you can try reading Vid's Guide to fishing

What I heard though is that the first levels of fishing can be extremely difficult and that Spearfishing is a good place to start. This will level you pretty easily and once you get to 6 or 7 you can start doing regular fishing with much better results.

I hope this helps you.

Dont get too discouraged, its quite difficult to pull in fish until you've leveled up a bit. Just aim to get bites and even if you fail to pull the fish in, you should be gaining some skill ups. Spearfishing is an awesome way to get a boost to skill, but those nodes are fairly rare.
As for bait, although not exhaustive and not 100% confirmed, it looks like so far:
All-purpose: Bloodworms, Rat Tails, Floating Minnows
Saltwater: Lugworms
Freshwater: Moth Pupa, Chocobo Flies
Rivers: Crayfish Balls

fishing is very difficult at first, but with a couple tricks you can land fish more often. First you need to know what the terms mean.

When you feel a nibble i advise you to wait for a bite at least once. I believe this makes the sweet spot larger when you actually try to catch it.

Your first jig is crucial as this will pretty much set your starting point of reference. I always start my first jig at about the 75% mark if you think of the meter as a straight line %'s going up from left to right. There is a good reason for this i'll shortly share.

Next you can receive a couple different messages.

Your fish got away:
fish got away doh /cry

you caught something but can't yet real it in:
This means you've caught a fish, but you are not within 20% or so of the sweet spot in any direction.

you real in some line: *first jig only
this means you're somewhat close.. within 10-20% away either direction.

you real in a great deal of line:
You are the cusp of the sweet spot, within 10% either way.

the fish is tried, but you can't yet real it in.
You are in the sweet spot. jig again in the same spot.

On your next jigs the term you real in some line changes i believe. It turn into the term you are getting closer or farther away
You real in some line - you are getting closer, but farther then 20%
The fish takes out some line - you are getting farther away.

The reason i start at 75% is that i can then work backwards from there covering the most ground. If i'm close to that mark i'm reasonably sure the sweet spot will not be beyond it. So then i work backwards to about 40%. I don't want to max out my distance cause then i'll be confused when it says "fish is taking line" or "i real in line".

If it takes line that means one of two things.
#1 If you did it right the sweet spot is at 90-100%.
#2 If your jigs were a little off the sweet spot could be directly in the middle of your first two. IE your first jig was 80% and your second was 40%... your sweet spot is probably at 60%

If you take in line that means you are getting closer. The sweet spot is between 0% and your last jig - aim for 20% and hope for the best.

HELP!!!!

1. Equip a fishing pole in weapon slot one.  (sometimes in a hurry one can (did not!) forget this step.

2. Equip BAIT in the pouch.  Make sure pouch HAS bait still in it if fish stop.

3. Go to water.  If "Fish" icon appears click on it.  Click again if u see one in your r-s list.

4. WAIT!  lag is very bad.

5. Soon (gods willing) your character will cast into the waters.

6. WAIT!  Patience...Soon it will ask IF you want to wait...click it (after picking depth with slider if u wish...it starts in center position drag and drop slider, keyboard works too)

7. Cue that line has dropped to desired depth.

8. CUE "Fish nibbles"...for first 10 levels click on WAIT.  (after u get the hang of it do what u want)

9. Fish will now USUALLY "bite" 18/20 times it won't que u to jig again--if it does... jig)

10. Click on "JIG"  (When it says "You Feel a Bite"

11.  Here the dot begins to go back and forth.  Pick a spot and press "enter" (or left mouse click)

12. The "DOT" will stop there...small time usually passes...dot begins to move again.

[also:  before dot moves, u will get several Clues as to where the fish is compared to where your hook is.  If it says; "FISH IS TAKING LINE"  stop the dot the OPPOSITE DIRECTION from the last BLUE DOT.

If it says "...cant real it in--that means the fish is CLOSE.  Choose a side of the blue dot's last position.  If it says "You take in line go a WEE BIT MORE the SAME way.  If it says" "Fish taking line" Go a little bit AWAY from your last click.

It gets easier with time.  Good luck an good fishing.
