Whilst logging the other day I encountered something kind of strange, and I wanted some other opinions on it.
I had been logging straight for a few hours, when suddenly I started failing every logging attempt I made. I would swing once on trees where before I would get four or even five attempts to find the item, and now was breaking the item on the very first swing. I had gained two ranks, but I didn't think that was the kind of "wall" everyone had kept mentioning. I just kept failing to get the item. I tried moving from La Noscea to Thanalan, and it kept happening. None of my equipment was damaged, and I wasn't doing anything differently from before.
I had heard the phases of the moon affected gathering, but I don't know anything about that, and I don't recall what moon phase it was during that. I didn't think about moon phases until the next day. What, if anything, could cause that to happen, or did I just have an amazing string of bad luck?

I think you hit fatigue. After several ours of gathering this may happen and you will need to rest (do something else) before you will start getting items again. This could happen after a couple of hours of straight logging (or mining and fishing). Edited by user Wednesday, March 30, 2011 8:09:25 AM(UTC)

Huh... okay, I guess that makes sense. I just thought from everything I'd read that I'd just not receive as much SP. I didn't think it would actually affect my performance. Well thank you. So, another question: DOES the moon affect gathering?
