Nice Trudy! I haven't noticed a jug pattern for black sole yet, but of course I am not sure if I was truly using thier favorite bait. I'll try and figure out jig positions for easier fish than black sole. |

I think we need to separate this discussion. We need to talk about leveling and about farming.
For farming - Truvy has pointed out that for farming she doesn't have an issue. So for farming, I would say that this is a great patch. It makes it more predictable as to where you will be able to gather your item.
For Leveling - Truvy and tragicnate have shown that gathering below you actual grade, for Truvy r50 fisher this is grade 5 and for tragicnate rank 39 botanist this is rank 4. So for this grade/Rank there isn't a point in leveling. you are essentially trading consistent item location for sp.
Now from what truvy has shown, and stealing her stats from lodestone, 84 is at this point the DEX needs to be at for her to get the benefit from the new adjustment. So we can assume (hopefully, as this wouldn't make practical sense otherwise) that this is the max you will need and should decrease with the grade.
From testing I have done, at r32, with a str above 84 and I do not get to benefit from this update. and so far, it has made it harder to gather. I have the best gathering gear that is at my level or below. I had the transition to the better hatchet this level as well. So as far as these stats go I am not poorly equipped. So logically i do not meet the rank requirement, So i need more sp to meet the rank requirement. The implications of this is that since i do not meet the rank requirement I need to use the gathering technique outlined on many sites. So at a maximum, I need 5 gathering attempts to get my item: 3 to find and 2 to gather. Depending on what I am gathering I only get a maximum of 2-4. So due to this I miss a fail and about 35% of my gathering attempts. Before the patch I would fail maybe 3-5%(mining and logging, fishing probably 10%). This has just become a large compounding problem. I cannot get as much sp, so cannot reach the rank requirement to take advantage of this. And the level of enjoyment has decrease proportionally to the increase in frustration!
I did a leve run, 2 for each DoL class, it used to take about 45 min to an hour to complete my leves. It took 2.5 hours. The main issues were that I could not gather the required items. Didn't have enough remainder, would always break on the last hit. Fishing was the worst. I got timed out of the gather 3 items as I missed the last fish 10 times. Also I missed a large number of my attempts at the 3 gathering points.
I completely understand giving us a system where we can easily target what we want for farming, but not at the expense of slowing down the leveling for the slowest leveling classes already! If they are going to make it so that it is random for leveling, at lest make it so that a well equipped gatherer can have enough attempts to still gather the item. |

Having now hit up my G5 spot in Riversmeet for Pike i've had the EXACT same results over 600 sucessful catches now. To outline a few of these things to 'keep in mind' when either trying to skill-up or collect resources:
* The base stats as mentioned by the devs' are just 1 part of your sucess when gathering. That one part NOW simply plays a role in your overall gathering, but isn't the only thing being considered.
* Sucessful gathering will weigh your RANK vs the GRADE you are gathering while also factoring the DIFFICULTY/RANK of the item you are aiming for. Stats like Gathering and Perception still play their roles so don't neglect to boost those when needed.
* A variety of classess offer attributes that allow you to modify and augment your skills quickly. Depending on what the requirements become revealed to be for a variety of gathering, these could play a big role in how we gear/stat ourselves.
* "Sweet Spots" are being a bit mis-understood with this new patch. Review what the dev's said:
"(example) At a certain grade and difficulty, having the appropriate rank, DEX value, and bait/lure will ensure that jigging the rod precisely in the middle will result in a black eel hit."
NOW, i missed this the first time around and didn't fully read it right. The actual JIG/SWING WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE if the conditions are met.
Taking SE's example we can ADD to that. Black Eel's are a rank 15 fish found in Grade 2 waters. They are fished at (-4) [aka. Targeted]. Now, since we ALREADY KNOW the correct sweet spot jig location, it should be possible with the "Favorite Bait/Lure" for them and the correct level of DEX to get a Black Eel Reel in by hitting the Middle (50%) on the Jig mini-game.
SOO...what this suggests to me is that it might be possible to create a 'Targeted Fishing Guide" (and other gathering guides too just minus the bait) Most of the info we have and only need to fill in the blanks:
* Fish RANK * Water GRADE * Fish DEPTH * Favorite BAIT/LURE * DEX requirement * JIG location
Rank, Grade, Depth and Bait we mostly have. The jig location is easy enough to figure out but the dex will take some time due to the nature of haveing to re-spec. However, we might be able to find a trend with lower level fish that we can extrapalate to higher level ones.
Thanks for replying. But how do people figure out the minimum dex requirement? Can you respec as much if you want? Do you have to pay gil? The jig location is actually kinda nice. It makes it all a bit more complicated and can make farming for special recipes a lot better.

Quilick what kind of sp/hr are you expecting. The new system did hit my skill up potential but I still can get 10-15k a hour farming a grade up. I use to be able to get 20k hr easily depending on a good route. I also do find it annoying that it seems the appropriate rank is higher than the rank you get the scanning ability. Even without the appropriate rank I find that most the time the items are still are the proper strike location. I would also like to point out that when you have proper rank and 0 in the attribute required the strike point is where it should be 90% of the time.

With botany and mining I am getting about 10k an hour farming my appropriate grade. It has taken a bit of a hit. But it isn't too bad. It is frustrating that it feels like the 'notch' type sweet spot doesn't have as much affect on what I am getting anymore. I can aim for walnut logs and get 1/9-10 attempts at walnut logs.
fishing it is not as nice as that. I usually only get about 5-7k an hour now. I am getting so many hook and instant lose the fish. I lost 11 in a row yesterday. I am using an appropriate favoured bait for the fish and gear so I am really not sure why it happens. I do use a distinctive pattern for jigging, but I don't think that should have an effect. I always will lose the fish on the second jig. to top it off I lost 6 lure when I lost those 11 fish.
The difficulty difference doesn't make much sense as my miner is lower level than my fisher, but I have an easier time leveling miner up on the same grade. |

Update: I got my botanist up to level 33 and found that the items were in a consistent swing location. I tested this on oak and walnut logs in humble. My current str is 99. i will try to decrease it to see if there is a threshold.
What I noticed: Walnut Logs - Upper middle swing Walnut Branches - Upper middle Oak log &branches and Iron Acorn - Lower middle.
I tried fishing again. my lusck wasn't as bad as it was before. I got about 75% catches on my hooked fish. I did notice that i was pulling up less multiple for the fish though.

Im not sure what the minimum is for Grade 4. I know at 0 with apporpaite rank everything is where it should be 90% of the time. What you need for that extra 10% I am not sure. Not more than 100 I know for sure.

As far as in response to "how" do you know what the dex requirement is, (or any stat for that matter), its all about guess work. You have to got at it when tracking as "Can i achieve 100% results with my current stats?", and if so, reduce those stats until you no longer achieve 100% results. This gets difficult due to randomizers, other factors, etc but one can usually get a 'good' idea/range for it.
Onto the reduction in multiples for higher rank items. I believe that the 'other' stat for each gathering class is responsible for it. They made no mention of this in thier patch release but i have a feeling its affected. For fishing that would be PIE. Once I've got a few of these crafts out of the way, i'll look to see if i can boost PIE and start getting multiples of my Pike i've been after. If so, then reason dictates it does control it. As i've now fished over 900 sucessful reel in since patch targeting Pike and not a single multiple.

@Turvy when it comes to mutilate items from a gather I do agree that the second attribute does seem to effect that. That being said I get anywhere from the minimum amount of items to the maximum with only 84 into the particular stat. Could it also be that some items have restrictions on the number that is gathered? I know for walnut logs it is 1-4. I am not sure if this is universal across all logs. I may lower the second stat to 0 and get data sets to see if I notice a difference between how often I get walnut logs in various numbers. I find it really painful trying to test this stuff out because in my mind all these things have an effect and when I start screwing around I usually start getting worst results and I want those walnut logs badly ;)

Yeah there is certainly some sort of relationship with it all. My hunch is that it is now Item_Rank vs Secondary_stat for 'helping' determing the chance to get multiples.
I havent played with adjusting my stats yet, but Pre-patch i could reel in anywhere from 1-3 Pike in a sucessful jig, now it is 'always' 1. Not most of the time, but always...where as the crimsons and carp still come in multiples.
I can't really do much more in maxing my gear (and as it is, Gathering and Perception don't affect the quantity.)...so this leaves me to believe its got to be stat related.
It could also simply be 'bad luck'...although over 1000 reel-ins in those waters since the patch and still not a multiple pike is odd. After double checking the ranks of the fish, Pike are listed at R43 and Carp at R46 (these are old ranks taken from launch and I don't know if they are still accurate or not). I have gotten multiples of Carp to come in, not as oftan as before, but it has happened.
Be nice if the Dev's come out and just clarify some of it all.

So from a post in Zam and from my experience the appropriate rank for the grade follows this formula:
Rank for consistent Location = (Grade level -1)*10 +3 So it should be Grade 1 = R3 Grade 2 = R13 Grade 3 = R23 Grade 4 = R33 - My info Grade 5 = R43 - Info from Solaris Rune on Selbina
My fisher is at 31 right now. I am going to try to see the difference in sp per hour for Grade 3 and Grade 4. I know it won't be great in grade 3, but fishing in grade 4 is very difficult right now.
Does anyone have an info if this really nerfs the grade 10 fishing trick? |

Well I have recently picked up fishing and here are my experiences thus far. I tried fishing grade 4 at R15 but the wait time where unbearable so I moved to grade 3. At first it was impossible but this was due to me using bait that was higher rank than me. Once I got the correct lure I found fishing pretty easy at R15 at grade 3. I averaged 15k sp hr and with some lucky sweat activations I got as high as 8.5k in 30 minutes. I am interested to see if the grind get more difficult as I progress through the grades.

quilick wrote:Grade 5 = R43 - Info from Solaris Rune on Selbina That was an assumption based on hitting R33 on DoL and getting consistant gathering location at G4. Assuming the next Grade up is 10 ranks away. How does it nerf the the G10 trick? Sure you might pull fish quicker from lower Grade spots, but there's a limit on how many fish you can pull isn't there? Plus you get about half the SP per pull if that. |

there has ALWAYS been a limit on the number of resources you can get in a given time frame before you hit fatigue. The bummer is we finally figure out (pretty close) what that was and the dev's just come out and say it. Good to know though at least.
For fishing, the only big change to the G10 trick i could think wouldn't work is the now increased rate of lure loss. Again, fishing i leveled up in 100% fatigue (the "You lost what felt like a <fish>") message getting 1/2 the SP you normally would from a sucessful reel in.

Sorry Solaris, I must have misunderstood your post. However we know how SE likes to keep the scale of recipes and grade changes constant, so I think it is a pretty safe assumption.
I will give the grade 10 trick a test this weekend. Just not with sinking minnows lol
As for testing on Grade 3. I pulled one fish in and got 50 sp and just said it wasn't worth it.
Do you happen to know if the Japanese community is talking about the change for DoL? It is gone fairly unnoticed on the english side. (Zam, Core etc)

I am pretty confident that the stat you need is based on the item you are gathering not the grade in which you are at. Seems to me the rank requirement is based on grade then stat requirement is based on the rank of the item. What lead me to this conclusion was black sole. I had inconsistent jig point but the second I bumped my dex to 111 it instantly made the jig point 100% in the middle. I did not have a reassign so I wasn't able to figure out the minimum requirement for black sole.

Once you meet the dex requirement then yes the jig point is the same. for black sole its anywhere from 25% to 50%.
