I have been trying to work a bit with android and developing an app for it. Of course my initial project is an FFXIV database based on the information of this site... Note: I am still working on getting the database to be complete, I have app. 600 new items in a table waiting to get published. I have also gotten French and German names and descriptions so look out for updates to the site... So: A complete database including the items missing at the moment with three languages (I am skipping Japanese as that is a bit complicated and the target of this site and the app is Europe and the states).

I have never worked with building an android app and therefore it takes me some time to make anything at all but so far I have managed to get all names, descriptions and ranks of the items into the app, make a search and display the information.

What I want to know is whether or not any one would be interested in this. If yes how much would you be willing to pay? Nothing, one dollar, two dollars (more?). As this will be a lot of work I would like to be able to get some kind of revenue as it also costs me to put an app in the market place in the first place.

Also: What would you like to have in an app like that?

I would like to get your input on all this and let me know what you think.

I'd love to do a fishing one, but I'm in the midst of revising my Jig Guide and ultimatly its turning into what FFXI Atlas use to be >.>

Speaking of Android... :3 Have you considered changing the forums to work with TapaTalk?

http://www.tapatalk.com/

http://www.tapatalk.com/plugin.php (faq)

It's free to put the forum on tapatalk (so Android and iPhone users can browse on their phones). But, it only works with certain forums.

Quote:

FAQ from Forum Owner:
Q: How much does it cost?

A: As a forum owner you are free to activate Tapatalk in your forum, and you are free to remove/deactivate it anytime you want to.

Q: Which forum system does it currently support?

A: Currently phpBB3 3.0.x, vBulletin 3.6.x/3.7.x/3.8.x/4.x, xenForo 1.0.X, Invision Power Board (IPB) 3.x, Simple Machine Forum (SMF) 1.1.11+/2.x and MyBB 1.4/1.6 are supported. You can also look for other forum system plugin developed by third party developers using Tapatalk API at our Developer Support forums

Specifically about this app though. I would like to have access to this site's maps and logs, in addition to a database of the fish, their rank, sweet spot, lures, and what areas they can be found.

OK so the response has not been overwhelming. People seem to be more interested in an iPhone app but this will be a lot more work as I am not that much into the Apple Api. I am going to keep working on the project as I find it interesting and then we will have to see. I have come up with the following feature list:

General (will be implemented)
- Support for English, French and German

Item database (will be implemented)
- All basic information
- Image of item (maybe, depending on how much I can compact them)
- Resourcepoints (where to obtain gathered items) (a bit exclusive to us)
- Favoured bait (for fish) (a bit exclusive to us)
- Sweetspot (of gathered items) (a bit exclusive to us)
- Navigate on itemtype, itemsubtype
- Filter on name, stats, type and subtype
- Order by name and rank

Recipe list (will be implemented)
- Ingredients and crystals
- Discipline(s)
- Rank
- Training
- Adding to list of favourite recipes
- Adding/Correcting recipe to website
- Filter on rank and discipline
- Sortable by item name, rank and discipline

Resource finder (will be implemented)
- Filter on Fishing, Mining, Logging, Spearfishing etc..
- Filter on where items are found
- Filter on rank
- Sort on name and rank

Clock (will be implemented)
- Eorzea clock
- Moonphases
- Leve reset
- Leve counter
- Ferry departure

Abilities (depending on interest)
- All abilities
- Filter on discipline
- Sort on name and rank

Battle (depending on interest)
- Battle regimens

Servers (depending on interest and if I can figure it out)
- Server status

Maps (If I can figure it out)
- Maps with resourcepoints (may be very hard to make but let’s see)
- Information on what is obtained at resourcepoint

Yeah its quite lovely really, very pretty and all. Completed. (and sorry not Palm, Blackberry)

Hrm..and awsome, it appears you can download the developers Blackberry OS for free, create a blackberry app account for free, and actually download and use the app on a emulator. neat

Thanks for the link... it really looks very nice. I am going to continue with my app and see what happens. After all we have some information that may be more or less unique to this site.

Please don't be disheartened by the seeming-disinterest in Android vs. iPhone - please. As an Android user, I get frustrated by how bare the Android app market is in comparison to that of the iPhone, so the news that someone is developing a useful FFXIV app for Android is phenomenal, IMO. =D

Thanks for the encouragement Zazari.... I am still working on putting this together even though (as always) time is short. I will make this android app as I use android myself and I have (more or less) no clue how to develop for the iPhone.

I will say that the app is improving all the time and I hope to have something within the next couple of months. Yes it is a loooong time but I need to do this right and it's a learning process.

When I saw the topic, I squealed joyously. Then I started reading, and saw that you were considering moving it over to an iOS application , and I had decided right then that as soon as I was done reading the thread, I was going to reply and try and talk you out of doing so.

As has been said before, Android NEEDS you. Please don't give it up. Laugh

Oh don't worry... I am going to make the android app. I was just considering ALSO making it for the iPhone. But as I stated. I have no clue how to develop for the iPhone.

I am getting something done on the app all the time and I really hope that I have something to show soon.

Keep an eye on this post and I will keep you updated as much as I can.

Theres one out I've been using for android called FFXIV Guide.. Seems to do the job well if not very pretty, but thats beside the point.

Has a recepie book among other things which although not perfectly up to date is a good resouce if you dont want to stop what youre doing.

I'd love to see one for resources like you're describing that allows for resource finding like on the site itself! Please continue development!

This is from last year but what happened with all this Kida. I was just thinking I'd love this for my Samsung Galaxy S2 and my iPhone 3gs.

I would also like to be able to view the site in formats specific for either of my phones.

Both of these would be a huge help. Sorry I never replied to this back then. Missed it somehow.

You should make a poll man and stick it on the forum page at the top so it doesn't get buried in a thread.

I'd say on the index page but a lot of people bookmark the forum and skip it unless they hit Home up top.

Hell even a twitter comment asking about interest in whatever you want to do. What ever became of that thread on Lodestone about android apps that someone posted above.

edit: That lodestone thread died.

Also, what about that tapatalk mentioned above.

What purpose would an app serve? If you're playing the game, you can get to the internet to look whatever up. Come 2.0, you'll be able to alt-tab even if you're playing fullscreen. If you're not playing the game, I don't know why you'd need access to FFXIV data.

I realize some people may prefer to have something pulled up on their phone while they're playing just because it's another more-convenient screen, but it hardly seems worth the effort. PS3 users don't even factor in yet (hopefully they will someday...).

There's obviously people who are interested, since there are replies to this thread with interest, but I just can't see why.
