I believe after observing some other people fishing and through my own experience that only certain fish can be caught in schools for certain areas.  I'm fishing in the Skull Rock camp (West La Noscea) area and was catching only Sea Cucumber, Coral Butterflies and Tiger Cod.  A guy a bit further away from me caught a helmet crab, which I had not caught yet in an hour over four different baits.  I checked him and he had a floating minnow equipped, which was the lure I had been using for the last 20 minutes.

I then proceeded to go to where he was fishing and I noticed it was a school rather than just open water.  For those that don't know, schools have limited attempts from which you can fish from. (usually up to 5 tries)  First catch in the pool was a helmet crab with my floating minnow on.

This isn't to say that these fish aren't a normal catch in other waters, but I figure I'm going to have to go back and check areas I've been to and only fish in schools with different baits to see if something new pops up.  Fish that I've come across so far that are suspect to this rule and their location:

Helmet Crab - Western La Noscea (Skull Rock area)

Dart Frog, River Crab - North Forest (Emerald Moss area)

There is surely a difference but I don't think the difference is so much that we are talking pools vs open water. I think the difference lie in the water type: Fresh water vs Salt Water. When fishing in ponds, lakes, caves and so on the water is normally fresh water while if you fish in open waters (the sea) you will be fishing in salt water.

That's the kind of information we need for the database... is it freshwater or saltwater. Say you are targeting a tiger cod and you somehow start fishing a pond... then you will never catch one as it is a saltwater fish. This distinction is very important. If you use the resource finder be sure to check out which kind of fish you are trying to get.

I meant school instead of pool for the topic. And in the instance that I gave above, that was in salt water both times, just one was a school and the other was fishing off of a cliff a few yards away where there wasn't a limit on how many times I could catch a fish like the schools have.

In either case, if that's not the way it works, I may have to do more fishing attempts in that area to see if I can get a helmet crab in that same water but not in a school. Another one came up last night where I caught a Dark Bass in a school in fresh water in East Thanalan, and then with the same bait in the same water for an hour before I'd never caught one.

It's very strange. :)

Schools of fish do indeed provide you with the oppurtunity to catch fish that can't be caught in the normal waters for that area.  It's something that will take some time to document just due to the fact that you will have to fish both the schools and regular waters for some time to get a reliable amount of data.  Another thing is that these fish that can only be caught in a school for one area can also be caught regularly else where.  Dark Bass as an example can be cought in schools as you've pointed out in East Thanalan but can be caught reguarly in CoerthasEastern Lowlands.

OK so this is actually something we will have to change to the database then. Would something like this work:

When adding an area to a fish have the option to check "Found in Schools only"

This could then be displayed in the resource finder.

If I search for the area East Thanalan I would get a list with all the fish caught there and then there would be a note for Dark Bass that said that this fish can only be caught in schools?

I think that would work fine.  I know it would be frustrating for people to see if they can catch a dark bass in East Thanalan and spend two hours there and never catch one because it they only appear in schools, but could hop over to West Thanalan and probably catch one within 5 minutes because it's a common fish.

I hope to implement this during the weekend... we are also going to expand the areas a bit... we are going to have zones and then areas... East La Noscea --> Bearded Rock and so on. This will help pinpoint where the things are better.

That's a good idea.  Because in Central Thanalan for instance, in the first camp area there are Grade 1 fishing spots, but if you go waaaaaay down to the SE corner, there's an area full of nasty looking monsters and Grade 7 fishing spots.  So the difficulty in the major areas can vary quite a bit just based on the smaller areas within them.
