I have now been playing the game for about 10 hours all in all and I have had some great experiences with the three disciplines of the land. I am going to give an example of how I think these are best leveled when starting the game. This is my little guide to starting out as a fisher while wanting to get mining and harvesting leveled as well.
When creating a character choose the fisher as your starting class. This will give you a weathered fishing rod and 297 bloodworms. This is a great choice as these are great for catching almost everything in the low level areas, both freshwater and salt water.
I started in Limsa Lominsa as this is the home of fishers and this is the main focus of this guide. When arriving talk to Dob, he will take you to the adventurers guild and let you in on what’s going on. After the initial information… GO FISH :D
I am not going to dwell on how this is done… there are plenty of guides for this (I suggest this one: http://www.disciplesoftheland.com/forum.aspx?g=posts&t=27) You will see that the fish are not that hard to catch and you will soon have landed quite a few. I suggest you sell them all to an NPC. You can also sell them through your Bazar and hope that someone will buy them of you for a higher price but this can take some time. You will need app. 1400 gil which is not that hard to get. When this is accomplished you should have gained some fishing levels and now be ready to take it a step further.
Go find P'ndolobo in the merchant area of Limsa. Buy a Weathered Hatchet and a Weathered Pickaxe from him. When these are obtained go to the adventurers guild and get some guildleves. You will want to get two for each discipline: Logging, Fishing and Mining. Look for Fieldcraft leves. They are all started from Camp Bearded Rock so go there.
Once you start the leve you will have 30 minutes to complete it. When looking at the minimap you will see arrows indicating where you need to go. For fishing you need to find a fishing area and assess its worth or catch a certain kind of fish. So find the location and just start fishing. If you are not the correct place you will be told that you won’t find the things you are looking for here. If you need to assess a locations worth just keep fishing at the indicated place until it tells you that you are done. The great thing about levequests are that you will get an insane amount of XP from these when doing something that gets you closer to fulfilling the objective, in this case catching fish.
When you have done the fishing leves change your fishing rod to the Weathered Pickaxe and start the mining leves. This is pretty much the same deal only you of course need to mine. When this is done… surprise… do it for the logging leves.
When you have done all six leves you will find that you are around level 6 or 7 in harvesting and mining and a bit higher for fishing as you started out with this.
I suggest that you keep on fishing, mining and harvesting until you get to level 9. Then change your leves for the ones at skull camp… rinse and repeat. This is how far I have gotten so far but it has enabled me to get fishing to level 10 and mining and harvesting is pretty close.
I think it will be beneficial to have all three disciplines pretty close in level as that will help me when getting further from home as I will be able to perform all three actions. It would be a shame if I got to an area and then wouldn’t be able to mine because this was at a way lower level for example.
I hope this little guide helps you in starting out as a Disciple of the Land. As you know we are currently working on mapping all the items that can be gathered in the various areas. If you want to see how it goes check out the Resource Finder. Many people are working on getting the correct information out to you guys.
