I got the ability to kick in once and otherwise it's been a lot of casting and walking between 3 schools at Knoll.

Stealth IV is a pain in the arse. I don't get why they won't let you move at normal speed. It's a decently long walk here from the beach back up and to each side with all the mobs they've implemented.

So far got the ability though to go off once using lugworm and got nada. Lasted 2 casts. Trying other bait using my old Yew rod at -5.

Finally. Took awhile but with Goby Balls @ -5 at Bald Knoll the ability activated and got the matter. Just took patience. I randomly was going between 3 schools there. Not sure if the map was supposed to show me a particular spot with ??? to go to or if it's just random at any school.

OK Just make a summary on all this materia stuff... Since I have not been playing much lately due to other matters ;) I would like to get confirmation on the following:

1 - Materia is obtained through Gathering

2 - If fishing Materia is only obtained in schools

3 - Materia has a sweetspot

4 - Materia is NOT obtained like shards and dark matter. That is: It is not a supplement to a fish or ore or log. It is an item gathered on its own and you will not get another item if materia is obtained.

5 - Materia is obtained at ALL resource points of a given grade within the major areas. IE the list above could be translated into:
Carbonized Matter - Mining - Grade 3 - Thanalan
Petrified Matter - Mining - Grade 4 - Thanalan
etc.

Vicious posted the following but I would like to be 100 percent clear on this:

10 - When "Fingerprints of the Gods" is active, and you obtain a Catalyst, "Fingerprints of the Gods" will wear instantly.

Also, I can confirm #7 and #9, and im also 5/5 on getting Catalyst with FotG active at right sweet spot (#8)

Farming for the matter/catalysts I listed above is what everyone is doing.

The whole system is called Materia (if I understand correctly) and you create Materia eventually like what is shown in that first link above. We aren't actually farming materia.

From what I also understand our dated gear once the spiritbond is full will be able to be turned into Materia itself?

I also saw this posted. read the last 3 posts. Little confused as to what they are talking about..maybe just farming?

Also found this on BG's forum about Spiritbond which of course is related to the Materia system.

It's a confirmation on lvling this up and I can confirm this as well after reading this and going back to check my gear and bond after leves.

"I can confirm optimal rank/class does affect spiritbonding.

Using an optimal rank Leatherworking tool with armor that was a combination of Optimal Rank only and Optimal Class and Rank, I did about 14 leatherworking leves. Before starting, all my crafting gear had zero bond.

By the end of the session, my LW tool was at about 30-40% bond, armor that was optimal class and Rank were at about 25% while armor that was optimal rank only was at about 10-15% bond. "

So is this confirm? this mean fishing would be hardest to get then, because we always yield slower than other, and now we have to walk like miner and botanist did.

From all reports yes it seems to be the case unless someone has information that proves otherwise. Any posts you find elsewhere stating something different for any of this please post.

This is just for locations and possible sweetspots for the catalysts/matter at each node or school of fish.

Also, I saw this post on ffxivpro today by Fouluryu on Materia so thanks to him:

Well, I figured it out. At least with how to convert an item into a materia. Each equipable item will say convertable/mendiable in an icon either white text or red text.

Red text = obviously you can't
White test = you can.

For example. A steel salat can be mendable. This means you can attach a materia to that item. It can also be turned into a materia as well. Also, a big notice you will see a black circle icon then and there where it shows you it can be combined with the materia.

Fastest way to get the spirit bonding up is exp parties. I got mines full in a 5-6 hr party. Also, equiping a patriot choker will increase you spirit bonding by 2%. Can be purchased for 1k at the hall of flames locations.

Materia: Keep in mind that some materia will say something like attachable to arm of CNJ arm or etc which is the only thing it can be attatched.

I hope this helps. Edit: I notice some ex/rare items can't be converted or melted down to materia, so I'm confused as to why they have a bar to begin with. "

confirmed decomposed @ iron lake. sweet spot is +5. aim for middle. 1/5 nodes. 3 catalyst in one hit :)

eta: ooooh FoG just popped twice @ one node. another 3 catalysts :)

Replace "Materia" with "Catalysts" and you are pretty bang on. You have the two different things mixed up.

Materia is converted from old gear. It lists the skill it boosts (Say HP +30 or Mind +5), and the different items it can be attached to. (Such as a Gladiator's Weapon, or any Feet slot gear). The different types of Materia have different names (such as Chocobo Dawn) and a skill level ( I, II, or III).

Catalysts are the different types of matter listed above. They are consumed in the process of attaching a Materia to the proper gear. No pre-1.19 gear can have Materia attached. The catalysts need to be of the proper level for the gear, and the crafter needs to have the proper job and be of an appropriate level (same as Repairs) to successfully be done.

Right now their is much much more Materia available than Catalyst to perform the operation. So right now Catalyst is selling very high. Even the lowest level Catalysts are going for 50-100k.

Are the catalysts actually SELLING for that much though? I caught a bunch of ossified today and sold 30 of them for 25k each. It was drastically lower than anything else listed, but my mindset was it shouldn't cost that much to have the catalyst to set a materia.
