For those who haven't found it in-game yet. There appears to be three elemental circles in FFXIV, one creation circle and two destruction circles.
lightning creates fire
fire creates earth
earth creates ice
ice creates water
water creates wind
wind creates lightning
earth defeats lightning
water defeats earth
lightning defeats water
wind defeats fire
fire defeats ice
ice defeats wind
No testing done yet on how they interact. My first guess would be, use ice attack on wind mob, it leaves it as water for chain, so use lightning attack next. But then I haven't seen many elemental attacks on war classes.
One thing I did notice is what shards mobs drop. It seems based on the creation circle. If the mob is an earth mob (Mole, Marmot) it will mainly drop earth shards, but it will also drop the shards next to earth in the creation circle (fire and ice).
