So I found a thread about a gathering limit. Something about 2,500 points, you lose 100 per successful attempt... however, that thread is about a year old and I know there have been huge changes over the past year. So, my question is simply: is that system still in place? I can't find any official word... it seems really tough to find info on this game lately. At least up to date info. I can find all sorts of stuff from 2010! Not that hardly ANY of that matters any more.

Thanks for the help and sorry if this has already been answered, but I didn't see a recent topic on it.

Still in place but it's different now. You may have read this as well:

You have a pool of 2500 points per gathering class. Each time you gather something successfully you lose 10 points. When you get down to 1000 points (i.e. after 150 successful attempts) you will start to damage items more than occasionally. When you hit 0 points you will be unable to get anything. Each hour you can regain 100 gathering points, so one day (24 hours) should almost refill your gauge.

A Dev explaining it too:

Hello fellow adventurers!

To clear up your questions, we have checked with the Dev. team and found out the following.

As a countermeasure against RMT activities, the probability of gaining items through gathering will start to decrease after repeated attempts over a long period of time. After a certain number of attempts, items will no longer be obtainable through gathering.

To explain a little more on what goes on behind the scenes, there is an internal counter which measures how often a player has attempted gathering activities. Players will start with a maximum pool of 2,500, which will decrease by 10 each time a gathering attempt is successful and yields an item. Once this number decreases to 1,000, players will find it harder to obtain items. At 0, items can no longer be obtained through gathering.

Stopping gathering for some time will bump this number back up. The recovery rate is currently set at 100 per hour.

If you have ideas and feedback on this topic, please don't hesitate to let us know.

I am not sure this is still in place actually. When I was going for the Luminary I reeled in more than 250 times on many occasions and I never seem to get any fatigue. I have even gone above 500 in a day and still no discernible difference to how much I could catch (these were bad days... but I have done it).

I know this is how it has been set up but I would like to hear from others on this one before saying anything concrete. I have not been able to find anywhere that states it has been removed but it doesn't seem to be in effect any more.

EDIT:
I found this thread on the lodestone. It is very recent and seems to confirm that gathering fatigue is in fact still in place though the limits are much higher than 250 successful attempts: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/41991-dev1162-Gathering-Fatigue-Mechanics

I don't know what the limit is but there should be one.

I'm not too sure about this either. I have occasionally caught 500 fish in a day without too much effort. Perhaps the maximum limit only has been removed? Because after a certain amount of time (and possibly catches cause I can't be bothered to count them all) I do start losing catches when I know I'm hitting the right hit ranges. This however isn't consistent and I will sometimes catch the fish regardless, and I don't believe this is as little as 10 per hour...

Edit: Maybe gear bonuses have to factor in somewhere too. A while ago I was certainly having more difficulty reeling fish in before I had basically no gathering gear. Now that I'm pretty optimized on fishing stats I don't just catch them easier, but it also seems that I'm able to catch more fish for longer periods of time.

Around 500 successful strikes you start to see insta fail from gathering.

usually requires 3-4 hours of hc gathering :)
