It has been said--And rightly so--

That WoW etc. is a 100 yard dash, and that FF is a Marathon.

This is a truth!

Final Fantasy is the best of the two--of course.  Then again, I am a FF lover.

Once again the alpha turns to beta to beta to retail. Once again the whiners opine the days of smoothness, or past glory.

Still others growl that these whining noobs need to go play Wow, or just STFU!

Then comes the crit...lag, too easy, too hard, to different--too the same.

I have been reading the various topics and reviews and forums about this very matter...Because I've had lots of time during the emergency maintainances and lobby malefactorums.

Here is an approximation of one of the best [in the fun sense] musings on the subject of fishing.

[Several guys discussing]

One guys says that he is having very much fun fishing so far...and enjoys actually being able to catch things.

DOOM-think occurs and all in chorus: "But if it's fun, will there be no challanges?"

[chorus again]  "Without heavy challange--The fish market will topple--be overrun by noobs."

[at this point I think; "What market?"  There is none yet. Fishing noobs?  They quit.  But I stfu myself]

Anyway, if you've played FF at all...even a few carpal-tunnels worth...you see the gyre.

Square needs to think about something this time through...at least from my perspective as an "average" to "needs improvment" but loves to play FF gamer.

The hot-rod, hot-shot, twinkers keep this game alive in the beginnings of a new release.  Never doubt it.  But they don't pay the bills to keep it going.

Noobs are a pain in the pouch, but they do keep the servers humming.

There is a certain arrogance in this game--And that isn't a bad thing per se...The hot-shots define the upper limits of play.  And go beyond, forcing new thinking and game advancement.

But I am old and slow.  I too love the game. No QQ from me.

However, if the so-called "challange" is beyond average moderate play vs time taken, it becomes more painful than challanging.  Pain is a Square algorithm--I'm pretty sure of that.  It's legend and it is legacy to FF online.

SO FAR---FFX IV is a Great Game

Better as you advance.

What I like about it this time through, I worried about at first.  TOO MUCH STUFF TO DO.

This is great because?

Because...People like me, who aren't gold star players can still have fun mousing about the countryside and checking things out.  We get a fair amount of loot--Nothing great, but enough to instill a sense of worth and fun.

In past games this soon ended as one was pretty much driven into large parties...where people like me were not an asset, and people who were twinked were frustrated by that fact.

Before, Ic oould craft of course...but crafting without a bit of fighting kills the spirit of the game.

This one seems, so far, to allow [along the regular storyline] lesser players the ability to fight winnable prey without getting in the way of better players who will soon advance way beyond that point--or be off to other things on the side.

Between crafting, gathering and fighting average prey...people like me will be happy enough, and twinks should get happy as soon as they race to the endgame as usual.

I just hope Square keeps some regular prey average enough to beat after 3o or so...and up into the higher levels.  Enough to advance the average player to higher levels without having to become something they cannot--For reasons of age, disabilities or other limitations.

I do understand that I should not get in the way of better players either--It wrecks THEIR game.

Anyway...

Yes, there needs to be heavy challanges available...and I hope there remains moderate ones for guys like me.

Having been a lifer ffxi player.. well close to 7years and I have done the hard core end game, grinding, fishing non stop and then I am also very much a lazy, solo, explore and waste time player. Just depends on my mood. I'm never strapped in for 24/7 kick butt all the time lol.

You have to keep everyone excited and interested when you mnake these games. I think this game will offer more for the moderate player than ffxi ever did while also allowing the end game users to get their gun off probably by late this year or spring.

I want all the cool gear, etc but at the same time I go at my own pace. Lately it's ramped up as I'm enjoying this game a lot. I am guilty of my share of complaining but I dig the FF series and never played WoW. Only other game I played like this and it wsn't even close was White Knights and then of course ffxi.

There is no telling what will become of this game..so many years ahead but it for sure isn't going to fail like so many say on various forums. That's just absurd. This isn't Aion.. not even remotely close. SE can turn gold into mud sometimes but they've been there done that and know wth to do. Just gotta be patient.

I've said this already though a lot.. if they don't put in a Auction House I'm gonna have a really tough time with this game. I've about lost my mind going through countless bazaars and it's so time consuming. Anyway, was a good post Tam. I hope there is mod. stuff for all of us. They touted this game for the solo player so we'll see but I'd like all lvls of gameplay to be consistent.

The Need of Auction Houses in XIV

The "retainer" system is great for a subroutine which takes the heat off of outdated servers that should be upgraded to do their jobs...and a "retainer" is good for replacing the old Bazzar system in XI.

But it is not an auction house which is both convenient and searchable.

50K+ "retainers" just won't get it done...instanced or no. And the instancing is a time-whore for players.

The "Wards" remind me of all the gill-buyers, (slash) merc. campers who stood outside the major cities in XI.  It was fun to search them when u have a year or so extra...but mostly they got in your way.

Now they instanced 100X that amount?

Give me an Auction House Square!  Upgrade your servers--Time you spent a few Yen anyway.

Other than that--Love the game so far...even with the lag and the emergencies.

Yep..maintenance, there goes my morning fishing spree.

I did see in other forums and in shouts that someone made a spreadsheet for Wutai sellers and buyers.
http://tinyurl.com/Wutai

Good concept, if SE could just implement something like this in game, that would be an improvement.

I JINXED MYSELF !

Well dammet, I done went and did it.  And I know better than to do it too...

I spoke too soon perhaps...maybe forgot to raise my hands in anti-supplication and turn to the east three times?

My Lucky Marrmot Foot got lost in the washer?

The moon was in the wrong phase when I accidently got a +2 and secretly grinned?

Whatever it was it happened about Retail Day...

Square held up its end with the Debbel.

"YOU CAN DO_EET" has soon turned to "Now I went and done it."

Some things I've noticed.

In the last couple of days my gear has begun to deteroriate like a mo at a carnival.

12 fights and the "Ball of XP/Class Death" appears to haunt the top of my screen.

One dam piece of a ring can cause me to have to run to town or camp to repair...

My fishing also goes to hell...and I'm not SURE if that's related but it seems to be so.

Yes, I will get my crafting up so I can overcome this problem but I shouldn't have to.

Gear wear keeps other crafters working...but in their absolute will to keep bots and RMT away, methinks

Square has also caused their wonderful game to suddenly GRIND to a halt.

I want to know which twinks whined and cryed to Square behind the scenes again...waaa, waaa, waa.

A Hint in case you havent figured it out yet...

If your XP suddenly drops to 33 from 133 and you just changed gear or had it repaired...

Look at that bone ring. (or whatever you happen to be wearing)

An un-noticed ring  (a cheap thing with few stats too) caused me thousands of xp till I got wise and tossed em.

(and yes I did run to town every 15 minutes for awhile to repair...but that got pretty old.)

Linkshell party people are wise to cross-train crafts for repairs in the field...a must in this game.

But as for the single-solo-player friendly aspects-- that were touted by Square...meh!

As for my progress, I am probably slower than most of you...I piddle and dabble and gawk a lot.

I finally made 13 Fsh, 12 THM, 11 CON, 9 Miner, and a Lala with 22 inch legs from running for repairs.

Today I'm going to try fighting half naked and see if it saves me any time--or if i just get offed a lot.

To me gear is useless if it's ALWAYS broken.  Takes the continuity out of the game.

Otherwise, I do realize this is a startup and much will be fixed as time goes by.

I just hope Square don't fix it so-well that it can't be played.

Othewise, I'll just wait for the movie the next game they make.

I have been fighting a lot but haven't had gear damaged as much. I am however not enjoying the lack of accuracy and lack of options to help this. fights drag on way too long and missing so much at lvls 10+ in pt's tends to get people killed a lot faster.

The continued dying and having to run back to the fight after returning during a pt leve quest got really old cause it was a whiffest and for the level of leve we were doing with 4-5 people it shouldn't be that difficult. I hit more on IT mobs in the dunes at lwer lvls than this in ffxi lol.

Is there much acc gear or food or any for that matter? lol.

Jewelry gives +acc, some food but I forget which. I need to start eating my food and log it's effects. I want to get a list made up so I can talk Kida into doing more work on the site.

General Update as Game Progresses

First:  Thanks one and all for your imput on this thread.  We'll get it figured out

Yesterday...October 2-3.  [Heh, my days span a bit] after I posted I changed tactics a little.

I traveled to al of the cities [running] so I could see and hear others and their thoughts on the game so far.

I piddle and explore, fish and fight a bit when I do this...then I craft the fish some.

I mostly run out of inventory room--which is MY problem of management going WAY, WAY back in my gaming history.  My mules are like prisons and jails--No matter how many I make they always seem to fill up.

The result of yeaterday was that my level turned 22 while my craft turned 14. [And my Rank--main--stayed 12.

I must tell you that I big-time screwed up my leve-quests at first and it took some 5 days to get them going correctly.  I lost a lot of momentum over others in my ignorance of the leve protocols.

This personal gaming problem has been fixed and I'm about a  Lv. 5-7 craft [field and trade] everything.

Then I ran out of gill and certain types of crystals...so, today is humping the brush and grind day.

I had a lot of fun leve crafting...which brings me to my next topic:

Crafting..What was heard about towns and camps.

What I was moaning about on the day before, a lot of people didn't seem to notice until yesterday.

Yesterday I heard many, many people opine that Rapid was not working and Standard was working too well.

Others seemed to notice that something in their crafting had dimminished...they wern't sure what it was.

Overall, because I noticed it a day prior and adjusted for the change--I did better actually.

On harvesting:  I heard a lot of lag related complaints and they were all true!

Also, I noticed harvesting glitches that are to be expected on startups.  Not letting you harvest, stealing your purloins and the like.

As far as XP goes...eh.

I am waiting for that to get normalized.  In the meantime I'm not fighting much more than it will take to replinish crystals.

I fought all day in the green and orange and moved 2/3 of a level.  Now that's caster solo-- so rest times and trips to towns for repairs and inventory unloads.

The fishing is quirky...I'm doing ok, and not expecting too much early on.  Others--mostly better players--are seeming to not like the the instability of the landings.  And they are unstable atm.

ASH poles.  I did notice while fishing beside another player who had a leveled pole--He outdid me about 3 to 2 on landings...though not on +++'s...

I also noted that the WORST zones for fishing holes...also have the worst landing rates.  My kid says I'm all superstituous, and all zones are exactly the same.  He isn't fishing them either:)

I agree that the zones overall are probably equalized--a Square legacy--But you'll play hell convincing me they are similar at my levels.

I also am boo-hooing about the lack of--or better, MY lack of--level 2-3 spots.  They are there, but as soon as a few more folks get to my levels they will be as crowded as the bazzars...and as glitchy as the lower lv harvest sites.  Besides--they are FEW and Far Between!

Like I have said--a lot of the new stuff is to fix many FFXI defects, which afforded bots and campers an advantage.  However" If everyone is a cop...then no one is a citizen.

Another thing...Tell me if you agree or disagree please.

I have long been curious about Gameshark users and gill-buyers.

While the lack of ready money may force some to resort to gill buying...

And the lack of talent or patience might have made some players resort to Gamesharking in other games...

Why?  I mean why even play?

I do see what I think are a bunch of gill buyers in the crafting professions...and these are NOT mediocre players either.  Most of these are good to excellent players...and I saw it in FFXI as well.

They gill-buy at the startup...get to the top of their craft and then bitch about RMT and gill-sellers like they were some Puritan priests.  Oh, they say they did it the hard way--but they lie.

Now a few played the early markets and did do it right, but a lot of really high end crafters were cheats.  Just wanted to always say that!

I'm of to leve-quest a bit now, and crystal farm.  Tell me what you think.

UPDATE on MY "NO XP" Problem

Knowing that with gaming you just keep checking for things--I checked all of my supposedly fixed gear for the 200th time in 1.5 days...

Well, the choker was doing it.

It always showed in good shape...but for some reason it was not.

I got out the ole hammer and went to fixing EVERYTHING in my inventory except my cowl.

When I got to the choker it SAID it was ok (number wise) but still gave me a "FIX OPTION"

So..I fixed it to 100 per-cent and now I got XP up the wazzzoo.

I am happy...so the server booted me

But it's OK this time 'cause I now KNOW to just repair all things whenever possible.

(ps. got a CON lv in about an hour, covering the last 2/3rd's of the bar.  The first third took me 1.5 days approximately...with the un-fixed gear.  It seems like my crystal drop is better too--but that could be the gods.)
