I found this very well written piece of information on reddit and thought I would share it here as it makes great sense and clears some of the confusion regarding the beta.

I've outlined those below based on your status and desired platform. Please let me know if any of this information is inaccurate or unclear and I'll do my best to fix it!

PC
Legacy Subscribers
You're in this category if you paid for 90 days of sub time for 1.0. You should have received an email and can check your status by following these instructions.
You Get: Access to all phases of beta without even applying.

FFXIV Owners / Non-Legacy Subscribers
You've bought FFXIV at some point and have registered it to your Square-Enix account. I don't think they're accepting new registrations any more, so you'll have to wait until ARR releases to register your game if you haven't.
You Get: Access to phases 3 and 4 without even applying. You can apply for a chance at phases 1 and 2. Your alpha application counts for beta.

Other Fans
This is everyone else, including those who have FFXIV but never registered their copy.
You Get: Access to phase 4, which is open beta. Some will certainly be selected for beta access earlier, as was the case with alpha, so do apply!

PS3
Holders of a code from FFXIII
First-run copies of FFXIII for PS3 contained a code for priority access to the FFXIV beta. Since this is the first time the PS3 version will have a beta, it counts!
You Get: Priority access to the PS3 beta in phase 3 if you provide your code with your application.

Everyone Else (Legacy, Non-Legacy, Whatever)
Everyone else has to submit an app for the PS3 beta. Doesn't matter what your status was.
You Get: Nothing! Apply if you want to be in the PS3 beta.

Bonus Section - Do I Need To Apply?
PC
I applied for the 2.0 alpha test, and was selected. No.
I applied for the 2.0 alpha test, and was not selected. No.
I did not apply for the 2.0 alpha test. Yes.

PS3
I applied for the 1.0 PS3 beta test and was selected for the 1.0 PC beta test. No.
The above condition doesn't apply to me or doesn't make sense to me. Yes.

So has there been a roadmap released yet as to when 14 will start back up officially. Even a ballpark idea? Are we thinking Summer here or end of Summer? I've been playing the heck out of ffxi.. it's gonna be weird coming back to 14 after all this down time.

Kinda funny.. I see what they are doing but I'm not really sure what to expect cause all I have to go on is what we did for 2yrs or whatever. Does it feel like to anyone else that we played 14 for like a year or less? lol. First thing I'm gonna do is find several new ls's cause my ffxi buddies coming to 14 don't seem that hyped up to play after all the links/pics I've sent them and they play console only.

Please, please ffxi give me goals and things to accomplish that take time and effort for all jobs/classes. That's all I ask. I'm a little confused.. have they announced any major changes for DoL as far as the guilds go and anything like what we had in FFXI?

Again.. it's stuff to do like the selbina contest, guild pts and items.. fishing rods and/or gear/items other than what you get in the guild.. like fishers torque, rope, rings, ebisu that we'll be able to get or have they mentioned that will be coming soon.

Cause.. there has been plenty of time and no excuse to not have this kind of stuff when 2.0 comes out or in a roadmap for 2013. not next year.

double post .. but I read the pdf roadmap file released last year I think.. they seem ahead of schedule and I saw some comments on xivpads that ARR should be out in a few months. So are we looking at a April release? I'm getting the game on ps3 as well but I'm finishing my new laptop and will be putting it on there too and I wanna be ready by release.

..and again just to be sure we do not have to buy any new pc software again right. Only new players will and ps3? Hmm.. so I guess I'll just use my original pc software that is on my desktop and install it on my laptop as well.. can do that right with this game?

The beta roadmap released in December (see page 7) pretty much gives a general release window of Mid-April to Late-July. I certainly don't expect it in April.

Existing account holders will not need to purchase any new software in order to play 2.0, except for those you mentioned--new players and anyone wanting to play on the PS3.

I don't think you'll need the 1.0 software on your computer in order to download 2.0 (it'll probably be a separate download, similar to the 2.0 alpha client), so I wouldn't bother installing it on your laptop. I'm not going to go digging for the official post that says as much though, because it might be a ways back.

Thank you for info Raldo. I am seriously starting to miss 14 now lol. Been playing 11 since Nov. and it's starting to get really boring again. Need 2.0.. Seems like we've been in a beta process since 2010. I'm ready to play the real thing.
