Hi all and thanks for listening in. I am going to try to give an overview of what is going to happen with this site in the time to come.

As you are all well aware the beta for A Realm Reborn is currently on going and as far as I know things are looking pretty awesome Love. But the information on this site is with the release of the new version of the game hopelessly out of date, and some are even wrong. So I wanted to do some spring cleaning. Removing the information we currently have no idea of knowing is correct or not seemed like the best option to me.

The things I wanted to get of the site is the item database, the recipes, the maps, the resource finder, the guide and the lists (basically everything Scared). These pages are no longer relevant and once the game is being released again we will have to build information like this from scratch.

Since we don't really know how the game will turn out (officially at least) we can't make this information available yet and will have to wait for SE to release Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn later this year.

I have been working on a new version of the site. This includes a new way of handling the data (that we don't have) and a new design. I have also updated the forum to the latest version which should help us a bit with spam and at least give it a fresh feel. I hope you will like the changes I am going to make and I am including some screens that I hope you will enjoy. Feel free to give me feedback on the new design.

the new frontpage
the "About" page
how the new forum looks

Remember that the content see above may change.

I am including a feature list of things I would like to include in the new site Woot. If you have any additions please let me know of ideas you may have.

Complete item database
Complete recipe database
Maps with information about various aspects of the game (gathering?, npc's?, mobs? etc).
Resource finder
Guides

Lists of information that may be relevant like:
Grand Company turn ins
Guild turn ins
Previously we had lists of gear and sweetspots, things like that.

Also, I should ad that I have bought FFXIVDB.com I bought this domain a long time ago (1½ years ago) because I felt the name disciplesoftheland.com was getting to restricted for what the site had become. We are no longer only a site for gatherers and I wanted the name to reflect that. With the new version of the site I am renaming it ffxivdb.com instead of disciplesoftheland.com. Both addresses will be available and our main focus may still be on gathering but I want to make it obvious for all that this is not only a site for gatherers. Crafters and Dow's/DoM's are also welcome and should find useful information here. I hope you agree that this is not only a site for gatherers.

And lastly... I am going on vacation for a couple of weeks. I will be back for Easter but am bringing my laptop hoping I can find some Wi-fi BigGrin I hope I can release the new version of the site within the next month or so, but if not it won't be much longer than that.

Now if you got all the way down here... thanks for reading all I have written and please leave your comments below BigGrin

Looks good to me.

I've had to make some web pages at work lately, and I do not envy the task ahead of you.

Come beta phase 3, we're probably safe to start compiling data if you wanted to make a non-public forum section. Though maybe it's better to wait so we don't have to second-guess our data? Your call.

All looks good to me. The biggest thing to me .. well besides all the work you have to do.. is the site name change. I think easily the most content discussed on the site was dol besides the usual SE and ffxiv general discussion and producer letters, etc.

It's still uncertain as to how dol will turn out but I think it's overall better to not focus just on those anymore. The upside of course to making the site more inclusive of other content and not just focusing on dol is more visitors/members but then you lose your nitch I guess but can't hurt. Just depends on how much of a change you will make.

For overall informational sites most people will go to pads with all the tracking and other character/job stuff you can do on there. It's basically a much better ffxivpro. Also, they have xivdb.com for database information. That's why a focus on dol was good here.

It gave us dol'ers a place to gather and discuss and avoid the disease that is the official forums... lol. But again.. I really don't know what dol will be like for 2.0 yet besides what little we have been told and what little bit you can do in test phases so far.

What will you have as the slogan or whatever for the site then since it won't be strictly dol anymore or are you just going to add a few new sections and keep it all the same otherwise. That new domain would seem to cover everything you've done though in a better way since you have the db and then just add some forum sections for dow/dom and whatever else you want.

Everything else looks great. I have given you some opinions already so I won't post those again here but seems you are keeping it simple yet expanding to try to cover more information and the game as a whole without over thinking it. I'm onboard with whatever you do but I will always enjoy the dol niche we had so hopefully 2.0 doesn't screw us over.

There is no doubt in my mind that this will always be a DoL site first. That is also why I am keeping both domains active. I am going to mainly focus on those aspects of the game but a lot of the things on the old site like item database, recipe database, grand company items and guild items were not targeted at DoL but all classes of the game and that is why I think it is appropriate to change the name. I also hope that I can expand the maps to include more information that may be relevant for all players.

But you are right in the sense that being a niche site is helpful for the site and I will have a hard time competing against the big players out there.

I am only one single developer and being in Denmark it is very hard for me to make it a collaboration. Data gathering can more easily be shared and I hope all the members of the site will still put in an effort to get the best gathering data as possible. But all that data needs a framework.

I hope that I can do all I did with the old site but do it better, faster and more intuitively for the users of the site. I want the new site to also be a 2.0 BigGrin

Kida, new site concepts are looking smooth!

If I may suggest: If this is to become a proper database site for FFXIV then you have to remember that the primary reason for peeps visiting will be to look up stuff. I would suggest a prominent and highly visible search option on the front page. Do not let people go hunting for the search. Think Yellow Gremlin. I loved that site! Simple and to the point.

Hi Eldr and thanks.
I agree and should say that I had a search feature and it was working properly but I removed it because there was no data to search. It will be included right next to the title... should have kept it for the screenshots but it doesn't make sense in the version of the site I am currently able to make as there is no data.

If this is tl:dr (too long: didn't read) then it's not of importance to you so move on! lol. It is very long by the way.

Well in the end Kida of course can do whatever he wants but like I said above every site has it's draws and niche from simple like chat to more involved like character tracking to podcasts and news to database development and then a mix of all of that and some like this one has a forum.

Zantetsuken, pads, gamer, mooglebox and on and on. The biggest gripe I always see with other sites is the lack of current and updated information like what happened with ffxivpro. Again with a niche site like dol you won't have mass numbers but I still think it's much better overall than a run of the mill site that offers everything but seems like a clone of other sites.

Pads is the exception where they provide pretty much everything but they took it beyond what pro did and some others and made it and are making that much better as we speak. It is a TON of work I guarantee you that for something on that scale.

Kida had it right.. he loved fishing in 11 and he took that to 14 with all dol so keeping that as the main focus should be great once again depending on what they do with dol. Kida already is well known by FF and 14 fans so just build on that like he's doing now. Having a database is fine as it gives one more reason to keep people here and to contribute and not just view and leave but that's fine too.

When it came to databases and information in ffxi I went where I could find it the fastest with the most complete, detailed, accurate and updated info possible and easily accessible and with great navigation.

That was a mix of the ffxi wiki and ffxiah and of course kidas finalfishing. As for the forums I usually used my ls forum back then as I'm not a huge fan of reading through all the troll bs on the official and that's why I like this forum so much for 14.

If you are going to keep doing a db then make it all those things I mentioned 2 paragraphs above as best as possible otherwise I just don't think it will get used enough to warrant the time and effort on your part Kida.

Probably like most people I use 2-3 sites for a game for various reasons. I also loved db sites that had comments from members like ffxiah did for most items. Maybe integrating the db into the index page like ffxiah/pro did to some degree or a variation of that kind of like the twitter feed, recent posts, etc.

It gives an avenue to access that stuff other than just searching or using the db menu.

Last thing.. it would be nice to be able to log in w/o having to leave the page I'm on or being returned to the index page. There are so many variations of code for that stuff. Pro's login takes you to the index but that's the main focus of that site. Pads does the same as well but the chat/index is the main draw. I would argue that the forum is the main focus here but that's up to you.

If non members are going to use the db or other options that do not require a log in then this doesn't apply but I leave the index, then have to log in to post so I'm back at login, back at index.. You get the idea.
Simplistic things like that can also go a long ways.

I just get tired of going from page to page to page to finally get back to the forum logged in lol.

Oh and lastly again.. I would love the option of various themes for the forum at least. White just gets.. well you know just gets old. With color/layout themes you have to be careful and not stray away from basics or it's a mess and I'm not sure what themes you can do for this.

Thank you for all you've done Kida.

Sadly yes based on what we may or may not have seen the old maps will be pretty much useless, except to confuse new comers.

Yes i tried many sites after ffxivpro died including the ones Vicious mentioned. I used disciplesoftheland.com for dol stuff but for gear perticulary after an update my fav was mozk-tabetai.com(java site) a jp site i belive but is in english too. you could search like all thm weapons of your lvl and what materia's attach to it really fast with just mouse clicks and without changing screens, they did it before mooglebox and they do it alot better imo >.>

Anyways keep up the good work Kida^^

yes thank you Koroma. The Mozk site is awesome as well. Except I don't know if they will update it again for 2.0. Same for some other sites. Mooglebox too.

Sites like gamerescape will need a lot of updates and were outdated a lot even during 1.0.
